5.0 out of 5 starsSimple, easy to fit, works great.

I have had alarms for years, but wanted to upgrade mine. Key things I wanted was for my dogs not to set the alarm off, different zones that I can control, remote access and notifications, which that has. installed it quickly and the instructions were great. One this I would like would have been able to set different alarms when you go out. At the moment is had "In" and "Out" put I would like to do part arming so as to be able to set the alarm excluding zones. I can do this but going into the settings and turning them off, but it would be good to have an extra option. Saying that, happy with the alarm.

1.0 out of 5 starsEssential features behind paywall since end of March, system returned
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 19 April 2023
It is important to be aware that essential functions have recently been locked behind a paywall for all new customers from end of March. This makes the system essentially unusable without paying a monthly fee. This was not clear at the time of purchase.

We wanted a relatively basic home alarm system. Not bothered about cameras - just a few PIRs and door sensors. Crucially we wanted the ability to be notified about alarm activations and to be able to arm and disarm the system remotely, and we didn't want to be tied into a lifelong ongoing financial commitment. After much research we went with Ring on the basis of many glowing reviews (both on Amazon and elsewhere). The Ring website (at the time of writing) and all reviews I had found clearly stated that the above functions were available for free. There was no indication that this was planned to change.

On the plus side the system is well made and was easy to install. I didn't bother installing the keypad (as I intended to use the app) and after setting up the app (and declining the Protect paid plan) I tested the alarm via the app. Turning it on worked fine. Turning it off proved almost impossible (it has a battery so can't just be disconnected from the mains). I was astonished to find that I was unable to disarm via the app without signing up to a paid plan. The only other way to disarm was via the keypad but this could not be connected whilst the alarm was going (Catch-22). I had to therefore put the (very loud) alarm in a cupboard, endure complaints from family and neighbours and ultimately had no choice but to sign up to the Protect plan in order to enable the app function to disarm the alarm!

I subsequently spent more than 30mins on the phone to customer service to clarify what was going on. The original agent claimed the app functionality (arm/disarm and notifications) was still available for free. After much protesting I was passed onto a 2nd agent who finally told me that this essential app functionality had indeed been put behind a paywall at the end of March for all new customers. He called this a new 'feature'! He checked the Ring website and agreed that it still claimed that this functionality was available for free and does not mention anywhere that it is now behind a paywall. He indicated he would feedback to the company to try and get this changed. The amazon app description at the time of writing still claims that Assisted Monitoring is "optional" and "no long term commitments" are needed.

I feel I have been missold this product by Ring on the basis of their website and Amazon description. Concerningly the Ring agent indicated that although Ring currently continues to provide the essential app functionality for free to existing customers (who set up their system prior to the end of March), they intend to remove this functionality for all existing customers within the next 12 months.

This is classic "bait and switch" tactics and makes me very concerned about Ring's longterm intentions. Being forced to sign up to a longterm payment plan solely in order to disarm an alarm which can't be turned off by any other means has left a very sour taste in my mouth. I can't recommend Ring to anyone on the basis of my experience.

I have removed the system and returned it to Amazon today. I have ordered a Yale system instead which in the UK still provides free app functionality and notifications without a lifelong financial commitment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb alarm and simple to installl

The alarm was easy to setup, however the Ring app proved a different story. It revolved around a long forgotten Ring account for a door bell that I hadn't used for some years. No option, customer services. There the problem started. There was some confusion over the door bell account and this was compounded by a horrific phone connection. Eventually, the CSA and myself cleared up the confusion. He deleted the old account and organised the new account. Sorted. Once every thing was clear the CSA was remarkably helpful and went above and beyond some other customer services I've come across.

The alarm, simplicity itself. Now armed with the Ring app, every component found its wi-fi connection without any help from me. It's brilliant.

Word of warning. The built in siren can be tested using the 'test siren' button in the app. I suggest wearing headphones, this is a smoke alarm on steroids :)

In summary, easy to install, very good value for money, and very efficient. A very satisying purchase.

This alarm is fantastic! I was initially anxious about the set up as I have the worst luck with these sorts of things but each piece was labelled in the box and the Ring app took me through installation step by step with their on-screen instructions. It was a piece of cake! I also love how Amazon decided to add tiny spirit levels in their accessories to ensure level fittings - it’s the smallest of details which make the biggest difference! Well done Ring for a well designed alarm and a very intuitive user guide! Bravo!

I thought this would be really difficult to set up especially since I am not the most technically person. However I was pleasantly surprised it took about 5 minutes to set up and I am impressed and I would certainly recommend it

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent alarm

The whole system is easy to set up with clear step by step instructions on the application. We have had no false alarms and the motion detectors have flexibility for type of detection.

The door sensors are fine but you do need to door frame and door itself to be flush for the connection to work. Our UPVC doors sit on top of the frame. You can buy specific blocks to raise the height of the sensor which are quite expensive. I just used some small plastic blocks and some double sided sticky tabs and it works fine.

Overall very pleased with set up and ease of use with the application.

We also have a ring door bell but this does not connect to the alarm system or slightly frustratingly use the Wi-Fi extender that is part of the system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, easy to fit, easy to use, DIY alarm.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 3 January 2022

I fitted this alarm three days ago, and have found it to be very straightforward to use, and easy to fit. I purchased it from Amazon with a £90 discount, making it a bargain in my opinion. I would have paid the full price, but would have had to wait until later this year. I bought the basic kit for now, and intend to add more motion sensors and contact sensors later.

In setting up the alarm, the base station is set up first. I had issues here. There were two options for setting up the alarm base, and I tried both options but neither worked. After multiple attempts I decided to contact the Ring helpdesk. The advisor was extremely helpful and talked me through the stages. The stages were exactly what I had done previously but this time worked immediately! (That is always embarrasing!) The advisor emailed me so if I had any more issues I would be able to contact him for advice, and it is a good job he did.

I expected fitting the contact sensor to be awkward as the frame of the door is close to the wall, but more than the maximum inch. I tried it before fitting and it actually fitted fine and worked with no hassle. The range extender was a doddle to fit. Plug it in, the app soon found it. The motion detector appeared to be just as straightforward, until it the test to ensure it was working. I tested it as requested but when exiting the test mode the app told me it could not communicate with the app. I tried re-testing it, but that didn't help. I attempted to remove the motion sensor from the app but was told it could not communicate with the sensor. I tried removing the batteries to re-set it, but when I put them back in the app said it was still in test mode and when trying to exit test mode it said it could not exit test mode as there was no communication.

Having had no success to come out of test mode I emailed the advisor. He made a couple of suggestions, all of which I had done. The sensor is working, according to the app it is detecting motion, but it is stuck in test mode. I am going to have to replace that sensor when I have a bit of spare cash. Disappointing, but hopefully I will have more look with others.

Once set up the alarm is easy to use. Each user has their own code for the key pad, but equally the alarm can be set from the app on the smart zone. Exit/entrance delays can be set if the keypad is utilised to set the alarm, so the user can leave the house before the alarm is active. The keypad is re-chargeable, and the alarm base station can survive for 24 hours with no mains power, which is handy if you need to change the location.

This is a very easy to install, easy to use, and is highly recommended. The issues were minor, and bar the motion sensor easily rectified. Once I have tried a new motion sensor I will update the review.

04/01/2022 Update to review

I have re-tried setting the motion sensor up. On this occasion I was able to remove the motion sensor from the app, and re-install. Upon re-installation it worked prefectly and exited the test mode at the first time of asking. This is an excellent, inexpensive alarm system, that I can add to as time goes on. A basic set up to begin with, that secures the house. Further motion detectors and contact sensors can be added later.

Coming from a big brand hard wired system, I was sceptical about this Ring alarm but I really like their doorbells so decided to give it a try. Installed 11 sensors, one keypad and one hard wired outdoor siren. there was a bit of messing around setting it all up on the phone and getting the base to connect to all the sensors, but once done, it all works well. The ability to adjust/disable each sensor via your phone, set zones, adjustable siren volume and see everything remotely from your phone app is brilliant. You really feel in control and and turn the alarm on/off even when you're sitting on the other side of the planet. Impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Faultless

I purchased the 2nd Gen unit when I moved into a new house late last year, the house did not come with an alarm installed but is in a neighborhood watch area so I purchased it for piece of mind really. I put off installing the alarm for a while because I thought it was going to be difficult however when I got around to it I got it all installed, up and running within 45 mins. (Note. Take your time and only connect each sensor one at a time following the instructions on the app). The sensors simply stick up into the corners of rooms and the contact sensors stick to window or door frames (as long as they are even and not an odd shape).

Once installed the system is a doddle to use, the Ring app allows you to arm /disarm the alarm wherever you are and you can also configure which sensors are active or inactive in the 3 different modes of Disarm, Home and Away. If you don't have a smartphone you can arm and disarm the alarm using the keypad only, the only negative point I have about the keypad is that you have to input your 4 digit pin to both arm and disarm the unit, i think it would be far easier if you didn't have to input your 4 digit pin to arm the alarm but obviously you would need it to disarm it (Note to Ring). I have configured my 'Home' mode to monitor the front and back doors only for use whilst I am in bed at night, I find that mode is also helpful when I know I am not going out but I can still move about the house freely without setting the alarm off.

Overall the Ring Alarm is an excellent piece of kit and easy to install, it is also flexible allowing you to configure which rooms, doors or windows you want it to monitor. It is more expensive to purchase than a conventional alarm and is highly reliant on the use of WiFi so if you don't have WiFi already in your home then I wouldn't recommend buying it, the Base station has a 24hr backup in the event of power cuts but I had trouble using mine when my WIFI went down for 3 days a few weeks ago.

Optional extras can be easily bought and added to your system such as an external alarm with flashing light and external sensors for your gates, sheds or storage units.

Included with the alarm is a complimentary 30 day trial use of the Ring Monitoring Scheme which would contact your next of kin should you use the panic button, it can also contact the Police if your alarm is triggered whilst your away but it comes at a price. The basic cost is £8 per month if you want your Next of Kin notified if your alarm triggers whilst your are away and the full monitoring scheme costs more however this is purely optional and you do not need to subscribe if you aren't bothered about it.

Took me less than a morning to fit it all. I haven't fitted the outside siren yet but all the wiring to keep i on charge is in place so It will take perhaps an hour when I get round to drilling a hole through the outside wall!

So no problem but I only give 5* where the performance or service is well above what should be expected. So 4* is very good (probably equivalent to most people's 5*), for me 5* would need to be exceptional in some way.
