Ok so I am off on a long haul flight soon and wanted a new tablet to enable film use and to help alleviate the boredom. I was going to get an iPad Mini or something similar and this popped up. For the money, I decided to take a punt.

First impressions:

Build: Excellent
Feel: Well made and fit for purpose
Screen: Good quality glass but the brightness is crap. Even on full its not the brightest and I think this will impact the experience and battery life quite a lot.
Apps: A bit hit & miss tbh. Im disappointed as I cant use Deezer on this and that's annoying. Amazon dropped the ball here.
Speakers: Could be a little better but they are ideal for when alone and no background noise.
Blutooth: I hooked up my AirPods Pro to this seamlessly so that's a bonus.
Storage: 64gb is recommended as 32gb would get eaten up in minutes. You can upgrade the storage with micro SD cards and I am yet to try this. It says up to 1tb but the suggested SD cards are only 64gb so not sure why.
Processor & RAM: Despite having 3gb RAM this has been glitchy whilst only running Disney+/Netflix/Prime Video and I do genuinely expect better.
Overall: 3/5 but I kinda expected that based on the price. If the glitches were sorted it would get a 4/5 and if it could play the common apps like Deezer, I would give it a higher score for that.

Is it better than an iPad.... no. is it cheaper? Hell yes. Does it do the same job? Pretty much yes but I wouldn't want to do major work on this as it simply couldn't handle it. An iPad could.

I will however be buying another few of these for the kids and wife for the trip so that has to mean something.

Update to Problems with audible app sleep timer function

The kindle fire table itself seems very good. It is is easy and quick to use.
BUT - it comes with the audible app installed, and the sleep time function does not work. When you select it all you can see is a blank grey box, no timings. This function is very important to me and works on other devices, but not this. No joy with the help line chat, and I can see from the amazon community that this is a common problem that has not been resolved. If this function is important to you then I can't recommend purchasing. I will happily change this review if this can be resolved as the everything else about it is good.

An update to this - weirdly, you can see the Audible sleep time function if the tablet is in portrait at the bottom of the pop up box. Still can't access in landscape as you can't scroll down to it. However, I'm just happy to use it.

I have just purchased 12th generation kindle, which unfortunately does not have the group series in library as the 7th generation kindle.
It is a great feature to have when a author has a number of books in a series.
Hopefully this be added in the near future fingers crossed.

I bought this little tablet reduced to £61 during the Black Friday sale. It’s really good. Well worth the full price, never mind the price I paid.

This is a lovely mid-sized tablet. It comes in a neat box with the only plastic packaging a bag around the device itself, something that’s required in the shipping of items with inbuilt batteries. The tablet is accompanied by a charger plug and USB-C cable, though you need your own wireless charger. I have an Otterbox charging pad that this seems to work with happily enough.

The back of the tablet has a dimpled texture all over. The housing is made from plastic that feels quite soft to touch and is not slippery. I opted for preregistration associating this with my account. This still required router password access and sign-in passwords, but no fiddling about with finding and adding serial numbers. If I’d wanted to set this up as a child’s device, this would have been easy to do, with prompts included as part of the setup process.

The screen quality is really very good. It doesn’t quite have the sharpness of the display on my iPad, but it’s not far off and since this cost a small fraction of the iPad price I’m quite impressed with it. The audio quality is good for a tablet. Playback of videos is excellent - good, sharp, crisp images and clear sound. The cameras are pretty good, coping well in natural daylight and yielding decent quality images and videos. Screen rotation is quick, if a little jerky. Browser performance is fast.

This is a feature-packed device, with plenty of Apps pre-installed including the Silk browser, Prime Video, and Kindle apps. One thing I wasn’t so impressed by was that sign-ups to Audible and Kindle Unlimited were pushed as part of the setup process - it would not be hard to sign up accidentally.

A couple of omissions, some improvements in previous gen

First things first... if you already have the previous (10th generation) fire, the 30% performance increase isn't really noticeable, and nothing much else has changed. Annoyingly, any added micro-SD card still has to be formatted in FAT32 which limits file sizes to 4GB. Otherwise it's a good solid tablet for the money for consuming Amazon-centred media offerings (Kindle, Comixology, Prime Video, Music Unlimited) and 3rd party stuff such as Disney+. One nice upgrade is to Bluetooth which now supports Sony's lossless LDAC codec, and has a near zero latency.

Had this tablet a while now, my verdict is still out on it, there is a lot to like on it but I do miss not being to just download apps using Google Play and transferring my photos to my desktop computer involves more steps.

Pros: Lightweight, fast processor, decent battery life with an improved & varied amount of apps on the Amazon Appstore (You can even remote play your Xbox with this Kindle, providing you download the Xbox app).

Cons: Screen resolution is not comparable to a mobile device that can do razor sharp HD or 4K (Not really impacting any quality of life) & there is no biometric security to unlock your lock screen (PIN only).

Compared to my Kindle Fire HD 7 from 2013, this is a big improvement on so many levels. Great for reading, browsing the Web, playing games, streaming TV, or just shopping on Amazon.

If you're looking for a good tablet without breaking the bank, then you can't go wrong with this. Highly recommended.
