How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

4.0 out of 5 starsA Marvellous but Limited Device: An In-Depth Review of the Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 11 February 2023
The Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor is a rather marvellous device that I recently purchased to integrate with my home ventilation system. I was looking for a way to keep an eye on the air quality in my home and this device seemed like the perfect solution.

While I do believe that the monitor itself is a great piece of kit, it is unfortunately rather limited by the Alexa ecosystem. There are many options to set up Alexa routines using various measured parameters, but these routines frequently do not run when they're meant to, even though the air quality has changed below or above a defined threshold. The built-in routines to alert an associated Alexa speaker when the air quality has changed to poor do seem to be working reliably, but custom routines can be a bit hit and miss.

Furthermore, there is no official way to integrate this device with other home automation systems such as Home Assistant, which would make it much more versatile and popular. Additionally, the device takes a bit of time to boot up when first plugged in and some of the readings, such as VOCs, can be a bit confusing to interpret. Finally, it's a shame that the Alexa app requires quite a bit of navigation to see the air quality and that there is no option to use an Echo with a display to show the air quality as one of the slides.

Despite these niggles, I do think that the Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor is a decent option, especially if you are simply looking for something to check the air quality in your home and be alerted when it changes to poor. It is perhaps a bit pricey, especially if you need a few of these devices, but considering the alternatives on the market, it does seem like a good choice.

Fun fact: this device is quite an eye-opener when it comes to the air quality in your kitchen when cooking, even on an electric stove! All in all, I would say that this device is a rather clever and useful piece of kit, even if it does have a few limitations.

3.0 out of 5 starsDoes the job but the lack of information on how to use it makes it hard work
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 4 January 2023
So first off I think the monitor itself is actually quite nice. It’s compact and smart looking. 4 stars for that.

I bought the bundle with the Echo Show 5 as I had read you need a device to see the output unless you always want to use the app. However, with no instructions on how to use the monitor (only how to plug it in), I was stumped at how to get it to display or even tell me the air quality. Every time I said tell me the air quality I got local outdoor quality. The monitor doesn’t even appear in the Echo Shows device list.

Eventually I realised (rather obviously) that you had to say “tell me the indoor air quality”. At which point not only did I get audio but also the stats displayed on the Show screen. Simple but frustrating this isn’t mentioned anywhere. I also havent found out how to get the echo to show this on the home screen so I can’t always have it displayed.

So overall only 3 stars from me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great to know what you're breathing in
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 10 January 2023
Style Name: Amazon Smart Air Quality MonitorVerified Purchase
This is my new obsession! I'm constantly monitoring what's happening to the air quality in the house... What happens to the air after you've cooked? Are the chemicals you're breathing in after you spray your deodorant or cleaning sprays safe? Is the humidity causing damp and mould? All these questions and more probably won't be answered but you'll get a MUCH better idea of what you're breathing in and how healthy your home really is.

We've had serious damp and mould issues in our home since moving in three years ago, but since our roof was replaced and new loft insulation installed at the start of 2022, the damp and mould problem is totally off the scale. This little device is helping me to keep a record of how rain and humidity are affecting the quality of the air in the house and it's shocking.

Using this air quality monitor with a separate dehumidifier with built-in HEPA filter is helping me to improve the air quality in the house as and when needed.

I bought this device while on offer... For what it is, I think the price I paid was fair. When it's on offer next time, I'll get another so I can monitor two areas of the house at the same time.

Alexa integration is basic and needs to be improved. I wish it could do more such as asking 'What's the humidity in here?' without Alexa going on about the humidity outside and giving me a recap of the local weather. You have to be very specific with what you say for Alexa to display the air quality in the house without her giving you a weather update.

I'd also like to be able to export the data so I can print it out for record keeping. I'm not sure if this is possible but I haven't seen any obvious way to do this yet.

Set up wasn't as easy as you'd expect from an Amazon device. Even connecting to WiFi with an Amazon device such as the eero I use just wasn't straightforward. I tried to scan the QR code but that didn't do it. In the end I just had to set the whole thing up from scratch. Amazon, you can definitely do better than this.

I have a feeling that this tiny device could easily be integrated into an Echo device in the not too distant future. An Echo 5th gen with integrated air quality monitor would be awesome but being able to place this device in new positions is useful... However, a much longer lead would be helpful or integrated chargeable battery would be the ultimate in flexibility and allow it to be placed anywhere needed.

I would definitely buy another one of these... as long as it's on offer. I'd also recommend this to anyone who wants to be aware of what they're breathing in and help them to make decisions on improving the quality of the air in their home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works with Home Assistant if you have an Echo - Let Down by VOC
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 1 March 2023
Style Name: Amazon Smart Air Quality MonitorVerified Purchase
I have Netatmo sensors that are brilliant for CO2 as a measure of ventilation in rooms with people and pets. I thought I'd get a couple of these to add particulates, VOC and CO. They are very well made seem to function very well, although living in rural Scotland the baselines are zero. That said, VOC surprised me as something happens whereby I get a transient spike in one room that shows up on both sensors, so I need to investigate that. But back to the headline. These devices work with Home Assistant if you have an Echo so you can manipulate and present the data as you wish. The way to connect is to use the "Alexa Media Player" integration listed under HACS, and then the Air Quality sensors simply appear as Entities. They don't show as Devices as they piggy-back on the Echo devices.

EDIT: I can't get the VOC readings to behave. I bought a 3rd sensor and ran all three sensors close together, and whilst the VOC readings started and finished at the same time, the magnitudes were wildly different. I know the VOC sensor is made by Sensirion who have a great reputation, so I don't think it's a hardware issue. So it's probably some corruption of Sensirion’s Gas Index Algorithm that has been reduced from 0-500 to 0-100 for use with this device. I can't communicate this to Amazon, so my 3 sensors are going back. It's a shame.

There are many cheaper (at standard price) products that claim to do the same or at least part of the same functionality as this.

I obviously have not checked them all, I’m not even close. But so far I have found nothing that provides this level of data in real time as accurately as this product. I’ve also found no products that integrate with Alexa and Alexa routines as well. That may seem obvious being an Amazon product but as my smart home is controlled by Alexa that is important.

Yes I could do with a battery version with limited functions that integrates as well, but I can’t find that. This works perfectly in our main room though and triggers multiple routines related to air quality and temperature as required so I am fully satisfied.

I will wait for offers before I buy a 2nd though, but the cost does reflect the quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice "casual buy" device, but let down by software
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 26 November 2022

The media could not be loaded.
I bought this on a whim on Black Friday week, using up a few Amazon vouchers I had.

I've had it for a few days and it's better than I thought it would be. It was very easy to set up and I had no problem connecting to my Alexa.

It is a diddy little monitor, smaller than I expected but that is no bad thing. I keep it in the bedroom and switch off the LED indicator light at night as it does look a bit bright.

Initially I wasn't sure if it was working very well at all, the readings all showed in the good / excellent range. We do live-in and rural area so apart from bonfires and wood burning stoves the air quality is usually pretty good. The LED light is green but turns to orange or red if the air quality deteriorates.

But we put the bread maker on overnight and the smell of bread was wafting through the house, through the closed doors, early on. The monitor picked this up pretty quickly, and wasn't happy. My Alexa gave me an audible notification that the air quality in the bedroom had deteriorated.

I opened the bedroom window to freshen up the room, and the reading slowly went back to more normal. But soon after I shut the window, the odour of the bread built up again and this was reflected in the readings. You can see this in the attached screenshot.

I like that you can choose to display readings for the hour / day / week.

The biggest downside is this software. The app for the monitor has to be accessed through the Alexa app. This means that there are unnecessary number of clicks just to get to the dashboard. The monitor really needs its own little app without the extra faffing around to access it.

Overall this is a good little device. It does encourage me to fling open the windows a couple of times a day to keep the air quality in the room as good as possible. My health is poor and I spend much of my time in my bedroom, and especially during the winter months it can be tempting to keep the windows shut to keep the heat in.

So would I buy it again if it packed up? Probably not, it's a "nice to have" device rather than a "must have" device. And for the money I certainly wouldn't rely on it if you have health conditions related to air quality.

But fo a Black Friday "whim" item it gets the thumbs up.

What I like about this is that the readings happen in real time . I plugged this in to a power bank so I could get carbon monoxide readings from different locations for a instant reading

I do wish it had a display on the unit otherwise you have to keep opening the alexa app to see any info or if you have a echo show you can see info displayed on that

It's also incredibly power efficient and most of the time drawing only 0.5w -1w of electricity, great for use on a power bank .

In the alexa app you can set up voice alerts .eg . You can set a alexa announcement if co levels reach 10ppm or any number you want

You can also set routines for the pm monitor to swith on a air purification machine when particulate matter gets to high .

If this only had a display so I could glance and see the readings instead of having to open the app everytime it would be perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very accurate readings and updates in real-time. Worth the price!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 22 January 2023

Carbon Monoxide alarms usually go for £20+ and only alert the end-user via beeps; but this device is really handy. The device will inform you if there is anything toxic in the atmosphere.

Plus, I have this linked to my Echo Show, so if the Carbon Monoxide gets to a dangerous level then it will report this immediately; I have it set to read out a customised automated message.

Custom Message for when CO level is above 5 ppm: "Warning! Carbon Monoxide levels have reached above 11 ppm. Open Windows to ventilate the room. Any reading above 5 ppm is harmful"

Custom Message when CO level reaches 10 ppm: "Warning! Consider Calling 999 as the Carbon Monoxide levels have reached well beyond the safe household limit. Please open the Windows to ventilate the room. This is the final warning you will receive!"

The readings from this device are also very accurate; yet all of you must remember like it's stated in the description, that this is not a replacement to Carbon Monoxide alarm and should not bought for this reason.

The only downside to this device I can think of is the lack of integration with Alexa as you have to be very specific if you display the air quality report on any Amazon Device (i.e. Fire TV Stick and Echo Show) and even then it will only read out the overall air quality rating which is not really useful; the device is only really let down by this.

I bought this to monitor air quality with an open fire (together with Levoit 'air purifier').
Monitoring is done via app which seems to be pretty effective e.g. detects particulates if smoke blows back into room from (open) fire BUT I've also noticed how effective it is with VOC's from e.g. cooking. However beware alcohol e.g. I poured a whisky and a short time later the monitor of VOC's soon indicated 'red'. More amusingly(?) after a couple of pints in pub and arriving home the monitor indicates 100 (maximum!) for VOC's. Clearly this works but I leave you to judge how helpful/annoying/amusing the alcohol induced detection of VOC'S is!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but of kit
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 20 December 2022

I have automatic air purifiers in my bedroom and living room but wanted a more in-depth look at the air quality. I got two of these whilst they were reduced to £40.
However the bedroom monitor wouldn't communicate with my Alexa devices. It would tell me the information on the Alexa app but I couldn't ask my Alexa devices about the air quality. I tried resetting it etc and nothing worked.
I returned that device and the new one works perfectly now. So I suggest if you have the same issue you return it and get a replacement.
Amazon sent me a new one before I'd even sent the old one back which made things much easier for me.

All in all I'm really impressed with these monitors. If the quality drops my Alexa devices inform me straight away. When cooking etc my air purifier will pick up the poor air quality and ramp up and at the same time the Alexa also reports the poor quality. As the air purifier does its work the Alexa air monitor also reports the improved air quality.
Being able to see the humidity in my bedroom has shown me that I might have an issue with damp in there. So these air quality monitors have been a handy addition to my home.
