How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsSimple, easy to fit, works great.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ on 15 May 2023
I have had alarms for years, but wanted to upgrade mine. Key things I wanted was for my dogs not to set the alarm off, different zones that I can control, remote access and notifications, which that has. installed it quickly and the instructions were great. One this I would like would have been able to set different alarms when you go out. At the moment is had "In" and "Out" put I would like to do part arming so as to be able to set the alarm excluding zones. I can do this but going into the settings and turning them off, but it would be good to have an extra option. Saying that, happy with the alarm.

1.0 out of 5 starsEssential features behind paywall since end of March, system returned
Reviewed in the United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ on 19 April 2023
It is important to be aware that essential functions have recently been locked behind a paywall for all new customers from end of March. This makes the system essentially unusable without paying a monthly fee. This was not clear at the time of purchase.

We wanted a relatively basic home alarm system. Not bothered about cameras - just a few PIRs and door sensors. Crucially we wanted the ability to be notified about alarm activations and to be able to arm and disarm the system remotely, and we didn't want to be tied into a lifelong ongoing financial commitment. After much research we went with Ring on the basis of many glowing reviews (both on Amazon and elsewhere). The Ring website (at the time of writing) and all reviews I had found clearly stated that the above functions were available for free. There was no indication that this was planned to change.

On the plus side the system is well made and was easy to install. I didn't bother installing the keypad (as I intended to use the app) and after setting up the app (and declining the Protect paid plan) I tested the alarm via the app. Turning it on worked fine. Turning it off proved almost impossible (it has a battery so can't just be disconnected from the mains). I was astonished to find that I was unable to disarm via the app without signing up to a paid plan. The only other way to disarm was via the keypad but this could not be connected whilst the alarm was going (Catch-22). I had to therefore put the (very loud) alarm in a cupboard, endure complaints from family and neighbours and ultimately had no choice but to sign up to the Protect plan in order to enable the app function to disarm the alarm!

I subsequently spent more than 30mins on the phone to customer service to clarify what was going on. The original agent claimed the app functionality (arm/disarm and notifications) was still available for free. After much protesting I was passed onto a 2nd agent who finally told me that this essential app functionality had indeed been put behind a paywall at the end of March for all new customers. He called this a new 'feature'! He checked the Ring website and agreed that it still claimed that this functionality was available for free and does not mention anywhere that it is now behind a paywall. He indicated he would feedback to the company to try and get this changed. The amazon app description at the time of writing still claims that Assisted Monitoring is "optional" and "no long term commitments" are needed.

I feel I have been missold this product by Ring on the basis of their website and Amazon description. Concerningly the Ring agent indicated that although Ring currently continues to provide the essential app functionality for free to existing customers (who set up their system prior to the end of March), they intend to remove this functionality for all existing customers within the next 12 months.

This is classic "bait and switch" tactics and makes me very concerned about Ring's longterm intentions. Being forced to sign up to a longterm payment plan solely in order to disarm an alarm which can't be turned off by any other means has left a very sour taste in my mouth. I can't recommend Ring to anyone on the basis of my experience.

I have removed the system and returned it to Amazon today. I have ordered a Yale system instead which in the UK still provides free app functionality and notifications without a lifelong financial commitment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheap for Ring system integration, otherwise look elsewhere

While I do like the Ring eco-system for its ease of use for non IT folk, having installed this for someone I don't really rate it. If you have Ring doorbell/cameras, then OK, might as well get this as an alarm - otherwise don't bother...

The base-station does have battery backup and mobile network backup (O2) if you pay for a sub(scription). Have not tried a different SIM. But WiFi connection seems poor, plus Ethernet port is at the top of device. WiFi is dual-band but not sure why you'd want to use lower-range 5GHz band? Antenna(s) seem weak with it always complaining it is "off-line" when other devices, cameras, etc. are just fine.

Z-Wave (used here) is not as friendly as Zigbee, but seems to be preferred for security devices, e.g. locks or alarms. But you won't be using any other vendor's units (PIR, contact, etc.) with this alarm - Ring only. With Thread/Matter coming that is a disappointment...

The keypad is nice, it has light on motion but pretty simple otherwise.

The sensors (PIR, contact) are huge, heavy and prone to breakdown. One has been stuck in "open" and had to be replaced. At least they use standard batteries: AA (PIR) and CR3032 (contact). Adhesive seems OK - so far - but PIR is very heavy - consider using screws.

On a deal with extra 2 sensors (thus 2 PIR, 2 contact) + 1 Ring camera - it is quite cheap for an alarm. I elected to use the "self monitoring", though if you pay the "Plus" sub for multiple cameras/doorbell(s) then you might as well use the "assisted monitoring".

I would only buy this alarm if you already have Ring doorbell/camera(s) and likely already paying for one of the sub. Otherwise, look elsewhere for better alarm, better sensors, etc.

Took me less than a morning to fit it all. I haven't fitted the outside siren yet but all the wiring to keep i on charge is in place so It will take perhaps an hour when I get round to drilling a hole through the outside wall!

So no problem but I only give 5* where the performance or service is well above what should be expected. So 4* is very good (probably equivalent to most people's 5*), for me 5* would need to be exceptional in some way.

Its a basic alarm system after all. I think they have some areas for improvement with motion and contact sensors and lot of areas to improve in the app specially when its in disarm and home mode.

The beading around double glazed windows are not flat which would involve removing beading cutting out an section additionally I would have too purchase spacers too level both parts of the window/door sensor

I always like using Ring products as they make things easier. As other Ring products, everthing is very straightforward to install. The only thing I can complain about is the sound level of the base station. It's not loud enough. Otherwise, I’m happy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant alarm with just a few flaws compared to some others

Installed one of these for a friend and was so impressed that I swapped my Yale Sync for one of these. I was always a bit annoyed at the Yale system because it could be a bit flaky You'd need to be having a party in the Lounge to trigger the pet-proof PIRs.

A doddle to install, love the 4G backup (if you pay the subs of course), and the integration with the Ring doorbell. Great, intuitive app.

Things I don't like:

I could press one button on the Yale keypad to quick-arm the alarm, frustrating there is no such option here.

No keyfobs. Annoying. Apparently Ring say they can get lost but so can any other make's keyfob and they can be removed from the system if lost. Appreciate the risk of it getting swiped before you realise but shouldn't we have the choice as with many other alarms? Also, only way I could put a panic switch in the bedroom is to put a whole keypad there, a remote fob with a panic switch would be good.

Not really any integration with my Yale Connexis lock. I miss that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Value for money ey ?

Purchased as a bundle to replace my existing alarm system.
Easy to set up and connect each device, also Interfaces with Alexa and existing Ring doorbell.
Notifications:
Can be set to snooze or turned off otherwise everytime you walk past the doorbell or camera you'll get a notification.
Notification sounds can be changed so you can diferencate between each device.
Remote monitoring:
System remote monitoring is the biggest advantage although you'll need to subscribe to a monthly contract to have all the bells n whistles otherwise "self monitoring" mode is defaulted.
Expansion:
System can be expanded by adding devices such as sensors, door/window contacts or cameras however they are more costly as individual items.
External Siren:
Disappointed to find I need to purchase a battery pack at an additional cost of Β£19 and a DC transformer at Β£20 further adding to the overall cost.
TIP: do.not install the base unit in a bedroom as the base unit also has a sounder siren which is very noisy and volume can not be adjusted, also has a nice blue circle light which would possibly keep you awake, I have pted to install the base unit in the hallway at high level the blue light also provides a perfect night-light.
Keypad:
Very nice keypad again easy to install either free standing or all mounted by use of the separate mounting cradle, this allows the keypad to be removed to charge the on-board batteries or you can simply plug in the USB charger cable for a permanent power supply if you have a near-by power socket, I like this as the keypad can be relocated at night and used as panic alarm without the need to purchase another keypad, product could be enhanced if a separate physical panic button device was avaliable with video data capture option when activated.
Sumerise:
A little costly however compared to my old alarm system this is a very good DIY upgrade with no cabling infrastructure required, I would definitely subscriber for remote monitoring if the cost was more reasonably priced.

Excellent and easy to install being methodical and following the clear instructions.
-1 mark for the HUGE amounts of EXCESS PACKAGING! inc electronic waste (euro plugs).
The system is very easy to set up, and all the parts are already listed (or use the QR codes to set up).. takes a bit of care but easy, and NOT 'technically difficult' at all.
Add future extra parts easily.
TIP; add all the parts near to the base station on initial set up, then move them to their final location for completing the set up.
WOULD very much recommend this easy to set up system.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but there is room for enhancement

I'm invested in the Ring/Amazon eco system so I was familiar with Ring service and products.

We purchased a new build property and the ring alarm was over half the price of what the builder was offering to install. I setup and installed this full system including 4 motion detectors and 3 contact sensors in less than 40 minutes. So easy to add the different devices and configure.

An oversight in my opinion is the Ring monitoring solution, this will call upto 3 people if the alarm is activated or the medical/fire buttons are pressed on the keypad, great except if you have fallen down the stairs you have to make your way to the keypad to activate. **Suggestion integrate Alexa so that you can call out for assistance and activate the alert**

Having already been a Ring Protect customer there is no additional charge to add this alarm to the subscription. This is a 5 star alarm but why have I marked it a 4, let me explain.

1) There is no UK available smoke/water leak detector to add to this system by Ring.(Come on Ring it makes sense)
2) Home monitoring offers to contact upto 3 people on mobile/landline, but as mentioned above it can be approved.
3) incorporate the cameras when in armed mode to sound automatic alerts to anyone near the home that they have been detected and you have been alerted to their presence.
4) For the elderly/disabled/vulnerable some sort of wearable device that you can use to trigger if you need help.

Hopefully someone sees these suggestions, overall I am happy with this alarm and would recommend.
