1.0 out of 5 stars##### Be AWARE ##### BEWARE ##### Flexible Relationship with Reality ALERT!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 17 July 2021
This and other XT2 systems are shipping with Sync Module 2.
Sync Module 2 is not available to buy as a separate product . . . allegedly it is coming soon . . . but not yet!!!!

So, buy this and become an involuntary Beta Tester!!!!!!

I have a sprawling property (former farmhouse with barns). I have FIVE sync modules and FIFTEEN cameras. I get free Cloud storage etc. because I signed up BEFORE they introduced a subscription service.

It is only a matter of time before I HAVE TO PAY Subscription charges . . . I would be stupid to think otherwise! So, seeing SYNC MODULE 2 is available (with LOCAL STORAGE) in the camera packs on offer . . . I thought I would upgrade.

WARNING : DO NOT UPGRADE IF YOU HAVE more than one sync module and more than one or two cameras.

I contacted Blink Support :-

Question 1. How do I save camera configurations.
ANSWER : Camera settings are saved on the Sync module so if you change sync module you will need to adjust your settings again.

In other words all customisation of settings will be lost etc.

Question 2. How do I install Sync Module 2 WITHOUT having to install EVERY camera from scratch
Answer : you will need install every camera from the beginning again as there are different sync Modules.

In other words EVERY Camera will have to be installed as though it were a brand new camera . . . you will have to start climbing ladders to get serial numbers etc. You will need to set camera positions once again, motion detection zones, etc., etc. You CANNOT access serial numbers of any cameras through the App. . . . you WILL have to climb ladders etc. AND cameras do not easily install (see other reviews) . . . expect failures to register cameras so type the serial numbers in a file that you can copy and paste from (and keep for future reference).

##### This is a grievance that has been aired on the Blink Forum for several years . . . Blink has failed to respond to the issue i.e. by providing a solution! #####

Question 3. How do I transfer a camera from one sync module to another without a complete re-installation of the camera.
Answer : you will need install every camera from the beginning again as there are different sync Modules.

In other words same as question 2

Question 4. WITHOUT a Cloud Account : Local Storage on Sync module 2 . . . will it store data from cameras connected to another module? OR only cameras connected directly to it?
Answer : It will only store clips from the cameras connected to the Sync module.

In other words, I will have to buy FIVE 'Sync modules 2' AND FIVE USB Flash Drives

The 'blink system' is on my Network . . . I can see all the blink devices . . . the blink system will not allow users to assign a module to a camera for storage of clips . . . one module stores data from the cameras attached to it. Blink treats every sync module as a separate system. [Whereas a product such as Energenie MiHome Automation uses sync modules which are integrated into a single system!]

Furthermore, you think you are buying Sync Module 2 . . . wrong . . . none of the much lauded 'new' functionality has not been deployed. You are buying a 'neutered SYNC MODULE 2' which will do nothing more than your existing sync modules (I do not have a paid for subscription . . . I registered early so I am on the 'free' set up).

The camera system description states
"Blink Sync Module 2: Local Video Storage
Back up video clips recorded in the cloud from up to 10 cameras to the Blink Sync Module 2 in your home and view them on your computer with no additional fees. Record your video clips locally to the Blink Sync Module 2 (coming soon). USB flash drive required (sold separately)."

Note : "(coming soon)" . . . when they have finished beta testing on unsuspecting customers!!!!!

ANOTHER WARNING : Sync Module 2 Product description states
"The Sync Module 2 connects up to 10 of any Blink Indoor, Blink Outdoor, XT2, XT and Blink Mini cameras (not required for Blink Mini). "

BUT BUT BUT . . . it then states . . .

"No monthly fees are required to use local video storage functionality. Local video storage functionality is not compatible with Blink XT2, XT and first-generation Indoor cameras."

Translated : Breathtakingly unbelievable!!!!! So, if you buy an Indoor Camera System . . . IT WILL NOT HAVE LOCAL VIDEO STORAGE FUNCTIONALITY . . . so don't rush out and buy a 256gb flash drive to go with it.

So, Sync Module 2 has been designed by persons with a 'flexible relationship with reality' and deployment of new features is non-existent! The product is a nightmare, totally misleading . . . and I think Blink have dug a very deep hole which they've tried to fill with promises they will be unable to keep.

This nightmare could account for the delay in release of Sync Module 2 . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars Doesn’t do much, but what it does, it does it well.

I copy&paste the review I've left for the outdoor camera, since it applies 1:1 to the indoor model, too.

*****
The system consists of the sync module (included in the box, can manage up to 10 cameras), a camera or more, and the blink app on the phone. And requires a WiFi & internet.

The cameras are battery powered (standard AA, charge is supposed to last two years. Let me stress “supposed to”), whilst the sync module requires a socket. So far so good.

Installation is monkey proof (don’t underestimate your forebears, though). Once set up, you can define the areas to ignore and a weekly time schedule for the motion detection; videos are saved either in the cloud (£) or locally for free on a USB stick in the sync module. Either way, you can watch them also remotely. The notification on your phone is almost immediate; video quality, can’t complain, really. 2-way audio. Thermometer: check. Infrared for night vision: check.

And this is the biggest issue I have with the camera: it has two LEDs; a blue one, that shows when the camera is recording, and that can be turned off; and a red one, that can’t be turned off, because… it’s not a LED! it’s the infrared. If you are using the system for security purposes, the camera will just make everyone aware of its presence and location: look at me! I’m here! HERE! You can turn off the infrared: unless it’s pitch-dark, there will be enough light to trigger the motion detection. Nothing, but ghost images to see. Which, however, could still be good enough. Or you’re using the camera to keep an eye on your doggo, and you couldn’t care less.

Talking about security: what if someone cuts the power? The cameras are battery powered, but not so the sync module nor - most likely - your router. If you are a bit paranoid, here an easy fix:

socket <---> power bank <---> sync module

For the connectivity, old smartphone + dedicated SIM as a hotspot.

Alexa integration: works fine, but is fairly limited. And with no apparent reason. So, for example, you can watch on your echo show your camera live, but can’t retrieve the saved videos. Or you can ask Alexa to arm or disarm the whole system (using either a specific command or more comfortably defining a routine), but it’s not possible (atm at least) to enable or disable a specific camera. It’s annoying, because the blink app can do it easily. So, why doesn't Alexa, once she’s been taught some blink skills? Mystery.

Also, I’ve missed the possibility to reboot a system remotely.

That being said, and with all its limits, a blink system is dirt cheap. And even cheaper when on offer or in bundle with other amazon products. And does well what it’s supposed to do.

So, all in all, highly recommended.

Perfect for what I needed. Clear pictures and good motion detection. Stuck them up with sticky Velcro as they are very light so no nails needed.

These little cameras are great for around the house and keeping an eye out when you are away or looking how the dog is doing !!. One thing to mention is dont be fooled by the need to buy a second generation ( Sync 2) module as described in the header . Sync module 2 is not required even if you have an older camera like me. Just purchased a new camera and it syncs with my older module no problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two camera system

These indoor HD wireless cameras are good, they do what's expected, the app is easy to set up and there's plenty of add on options for mounting the cameras, the system versions come WITH the sync module only the add on cameras come WITHOUT the sync module, the picture is good and crisp the night vision is also as expected, the motion detection is very sensitive I get notifications is the curtains move and the sun light changes but I don't think there's much you can do about that, it is a shame you can't view the cameras in the alexa app though and facial recognition would be a good addition which maybe could be added with a software update, but for the price I payed £74.99 for a 2 camera system I think it's an OK buy but you can get cheaper cameras that will also give local storage and facial recognition, so I guess you are paying for the name at the end of the day.

Update: I've been using these for a few months and I've had to use the one in my living room as a wired camera because it's very sensitive to changes in sunlight, because of that the batteries only lasted a few weeks I tried messing with the settings to try and reduce the sensitivity but that didn't work, and the camera has got its back to the window so it's not direct sunlight we are talking about, and as previously mentioned these cameras have very basic operation, yes you can pick them up cheap sometimes but cameras like the nest camera rang does much more for about the same price and cameras like the Aqara have a lot more functionality the Aqara G3 has a built in hub and IR controller as well as facial recognition, also considering these cameras are from Amazon they don't have great integration with other smart home eco systems, both the camera options above are compatible with Alexa, Google home and Samsung smart things, but you can't even look at live feeds in the alexa app with these Blink cameras, so I'd weigh your options up carefully before buying smart camera's, they aren't all equal....

So....my initial buy was to record workman completing work in my social housing home. Why? because they weren't! Have not used it for this yet. I recently found a snail or slug trail over my kitchen sink top which had a black dish mat. Horriffied i bleached the whole kitchen and walls as the snail/slug had slimed everywhere literally. Then i rembered my new cameras. I read some reviews that the motion detector was going off all the time and a response was to reduce the sensitivity and also the tempreature could be an issue. So I maxed the sensitivity on all three cameras and placed them strategically in the kitchen to where i thought the little bugger's may be coming in. First morning had roughly 65 videos (installed a 256gb external memory) and I looked with bated breath for the culprit to slime pass the camera but it didn't. In my dispondency I realised it won't come out because of all the bleach, so i waited until i saw slime again and positioned the cameras. Next morning another 70 clips but did not see anything or i did not realise what I was seeing. The following evening I positioned one of the cameras at the back of my kitchen cupboard where there is space and the boiler. Each time i position the camera I take a snap shot to position the camera correctly. I looked at the image under the kitchen work top and next to the black leg holding the cupboard I saw what looked like a fat slug. I tilted my camera and could pinch in but I was still not sure. That evening I alarmed the cameras and went into live view...and what I had thought was a slug was, and he was on the move half hidden by the black leg. (couldn't screenshot within blink to show slugs initial placement due to security policy of blink?) The next morning I had 75 clips (25% of memory) and slug trail on drainer. I opened the videos and turned my camera side ways and realised I could pinch in and there I found it sliming past my kitchen sink. I knew now he was not coming into the kitchen and sliming up the cupboards so pulled the boiler cover away and saw a well worn slug track. He had been coming up through the boiler pipes gap SOLVED! Bleached and salted everywhere.

The cameras are brillant in my opinion. Yes my batteries may not last long (slug hunting) but the quality of both day and night are exceptional.

There are other features the camera does such a zone. You decide how much of the area you want to clip (record)
Motion detection: Zone, clip length, sensitvity.
Monitoring: battery, temperature.
Motion recording: night vision settings.
Audio: enable speaker, speaker volume.
Video: quality.
Photo capture: enable, led status, firmware, wifi etc

Looking forward to using this more and getting to know the other features. I have read a review that says if you are not on a plan you loose the ability to view your clips directly in the app meaning you have to remove your memeory stick and put it in a computer? Also stated by blink Live View sessions can only be saved with a Blink Subscription Plan.?

If I had read all this before I may not have purchased the cameras. I'll have to see what hassel this casues then will update this review.

**Update: I did end up returning these due to the subscription considering I paid £189 But... they are still good quality but not for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bought One Camera System - Easy install, does what I want
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 7 April 2022
Configuration: 1-Camera SystemVerified Purchase
I bought the one camera system (just one camera initially, to try things out - I might well buy more now). I wanted this so I could look in on my elderly father when I'm not home. So I've only really tried out the live streaming functionality - I don't want motion sensing, so didn't enable that.

I downloaded the app on my mobile and just followed the instructions. It was pretty easy with no real issues. The live stream view is limited to 30 seconds, and then a 'continue' button pops up and you can click that to get another 30 seconds. This is, presumably, to save the battery life and is fine for my needs. The picture quality is absolutely fine for me. The speaker is really loud and quite clear (volume can be adjusted from the app). The microphone picks up all the little noises in the room. So no problems there either. A two way conversation is practical without the other person having to move to the camera.

There is a small amount of audio 'noise' from the app when live streaming, which isn't a problem except when you are in the same room as the camera - if you are, then the noise from the app is picked up by the camera microphone and you get a quickly building feedback squeal. It's a minor annoyance and isn't a problem in normal use cases. There is no detectable audio noise from the camera itself though - so that's good.

All in all, I'm pleased with the purchase and the ease of use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sync module went offline after half a day - need to be there to reset it.

We got this to check in on elderly relative so if they don't answer the phone we can have a quick look to see if they are ok. A bonus being that we can call out to them and hear them if necessary. (I know the sound isn't amazing but it's better than driving all the way to their house if not needed!) It all set up fine and the picture quality is perfectly good enough for our needs. BUT the sync module went offline the evening after I set it up so now I have to drive back over to reset it. Just something to bear in mind if you are getting it for similar reason. Hopefully this is a one off reset. EDIT - Caused by elderly parent switching it, and the home hub off at the plug...... Now have big sticker on plugs "LEAVE ON!" Not the system's fault... up to 4 stars.
