How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent piece of kit - plug does need 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band to set up
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 4 February 2023
I was initially just buying the smart plug at ½ price but for a ridiculously small amount more I could get both as a package. Once I'd set it up for my Mum I went to buy the same for myself but it had practically quadrupled in price. I was very fortunate to buy it when I did.

It has been a godsend to my Mum, who has become increasingly infirm this past year. I have since bought some more smart plugs - a different make, as Amazon's smart plug on its own at its normal price is a bit pricey (and bulky) - and now my Mum can just ask the echo flex to turn on her bed electric blanket, her lamps and even her snuggle electric blanket (so she doesn't have to keep unplugging it). I have also set up the echo flex to ring and text me if my Mum has a fall or needs help (via emergency contact). My Mum can just shout for help and the echo flex rings me. Once I answer, I can speak to my Mum through the echo flex. I didn't know this was possible when I bought it but I thought it should be possible. It was easy to do.

The other benefit of the flex, is that even though it plugs into an outlet, it has a USB port underneath the base so you can charge your phone/tablet etc with it at the same time. The only downside is the Kindle Fire tablet my Mum has, charges very slowly using it, yet her mobile is fine. There is also an accessory motion sensor nightlight you can plug into the USB but it is currently unavailable to buy. Good idea though.

Another problem with the Kindle Fire (an older model - 7th gen), I couldn't update the Alexa app on it (which was needed) so I had to set up the plug and the flex using my Mum's mobile. The actual instructions that come with the kit aren't as good as the instructions on the Amazon website. Once I referred to the website, they were both easy to set up. However, my Mum doesn't have to worry about the app, she just speaks directly to the echo flex just like it was any echo type of kit.

The smart plug is fine. A bit big. I prefer the smaller smart plugs but initially I only wanted one to see if my Mum liked the idea. The plug needs a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band to set it up. I have found this to be the case with all the smart plugs I have used.

3.0 out of 5 starsI wish it was smart(er).
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 20 November 2018
Oh dear, not smart enough. It is a plug, you ask Alexa to switch it on, or to switch off. It does nothing else. I had hoped you could ask Alexa to turn in on for a number of hours, then it will automatically switch off (for our clothes drier), but that sort of option does not appear available. I have spent a couple of hours playing with the Alexa app to see if it is my misunderstanding, but sadly not, it switches on or off at that time. I may as well just flick the switch! The only benefit I can see is you could switch off the plug remotely.

Unless it improves dramatically in terms of functionality, it is not an effective addition to a smart home and certainly not worth the asking price if you are capable of reaching and flicking a switch.

===============
Revisions within the app have led to some progress. I have been able to put together a routine that allows me to tell Alex to turn on the plug for an hour, then turn the plug off. Alexa will say in confirmation that the routine is running. This would be neat if I could put together one routine that asked for the number of hours, but that is not possible, so the only (messy) solution would be to put together 24 seperate routines, one for each hour in a 24hr period. This does not take into account half hours! 24 routines is ridiculous, as is the number I have actually created, which is 12.

What is required is the ability, inbuilt within Alexa to say:
"Alexa, turn on the plug for X hours".
"Alexa, turn on the plug at 3pm and off at 4pm".
"Alexa, turn off the plug in X hours".

Features like this would be useful.

I have upped my review from 1 to 3 stars because there has been progress, but not enough progress for this plug to be called "smart" by any definition I would like to apply. I have attached a screen shot of the routine for one hour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works really well for the price!

Smart Plug:
This is great, it's one of the cheapest smart plugs I've found from a recognised brand and it is very easy to setup. Two big weaknesses are that it is only really compatible with Amazon Alexa (I cannot find a way to use Google Home to trigger it) and it connects via wi-fi so puts a little extra strain on your network (unlike for example a Phillips Hue smart plug which uses it's own separate wireless network).

I have had a recurring problem where by the plug connected to my TV would turn on or off with might living room lights (even though it was set not to be a light in Alexa settings). This was frustrating and I didn't find a way to solve so I rarely use voice controls for the lights in this room now.

I also use Hive plugs, these are better quality, have an easier to use button for manual control and will work both with Alexa and Google Home... But they are also 3x the price. I basically have things I want to control via voice on Hive (so that I can control from my Android phone or Google Home as well as my Echo's) and use Amazon plugs for devices solely switched by timers and/or seasonal items (like Christmas lights).

Echo Flex:
It's great to be able to add Alexa to a room where you might want to use voice commands but don't need a smart speaker (such as a Porch, Utility or Garage). Really useful when leaving the house to be able to turn lights off via voice control for example.

Having a USB charger is handy and I have used this, though the sort of rooms where I am likely to use the flex are rooms where I am unlikely to be charging a phone!

Audio quality is fine for confirming voice commands and to be fair makes a good effort at music considering the price and size, but compared to other Echo devices sound quality isn't great.

Ultimately the price and not needing counter space make this a really useful product to have around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great smart plug…
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 3 February 2023

Really like these plugs… they are more than just funky gadgets to me… more of an integral part of running the home… both whilst in and out…

Easy to use, setup and very useful gadget!

So why did I buy 1?
Initially I just wanted to “keep up with the Jones’” and be “smart” - I guess years of watching films/shows where someone would clap and the lights turn on somehow resonated with me … now I can say clap and turn on/off a lamp! Living the dream!

But clearly it is so much more than this…
I have 5 of these now and I guess I have perfected an art (in my home at least) for using the routine function to create a more automated household and put elements of security / control and moderation in to our family living.
The ability to controlling lamps, devices whilst out of the home for me puts a big security tick in its box… with the old style timer plugs understand not brand new - however for me the revolutionary part is the app control I have - to switch on and off as I please.

Routines help me to control and moderate the little ones screen time… having set up times on the app to “switch on/off” power to the tv/consoles etc for homework time, dinner time, bedtime etc is great… creating a sustainable fair routine that works for our family.
I also use one for my regulating and controlling my tropical aquarium… again simple on and off commands and routines to keep a stable boo environment for my gosh to thrive in.
The voice control with Alexa coupled with a smart plug absolutely makes it easier for he to control those non smart devices.
I also believe that even though technically the plugs are “always on” using the routine function to set times for energy hungry devices to switch off when not in use and on when needed drives down the energy bill and in these days even a slight reduction in energy usage is good for the planet and the pocket.

Very easy: plug in, connect to Alexa (mine came linked to my Alexa account already) and use.

This review asked about timer function - didn't know it has that and nothing in the manual about it. Am using it to turn tv off and on so we don't have to get off the sofa to do it (we don't want to use standby). Does the job. Kids love it.

... reviews on here for this item that this one will probably get lost amongst them. However, in the hope that it might assist even just one person, I shall persevere.

Once set up, this product works perfectly with any Alexa smart speaker. The response to commands is instantaneous. The reason for this review is to bring your attention to a little issue I had when setting the thing up.

I tried and tried to get the Alexa app to 'find' this plug. It wouldn't. (I have tried many others so I knew what I was doing.) So then I started thinking. What was different about what I was doing on this occasion ?

I had it plugged into an extension tower. You know the sort, I'm sure. This one has some kind of shielding/surge protection built in.

So I took it out of there and plugged it into another socket (a 'normal' extension lead, as it happens). The app found it immediately ! Having set it up, I was curious, so I plugged it back into the tower one that hadn't worked first time. I didn't expect it to respond to Alexa's command. It did. Perfectly. And there it has stayed.

I am absolutely convinced that - for whatever reason - I could not set it up initially because the system did not like the socket it was plugged into. It cannot have been coincidence what happened, especially as I am quite good at logical 'troubleshooting' before I make a judgement.

This review, then, is my attempt to help anyone else who might be/have been similarly affected. Don't give up. Plug it in elsewhere. As my experience proves, you can always try putting it back where you initially had issues.

As is my wont, I shall update this review should the item cease to function as it ought...

I bought two of these, I kept one for myself and gave the other to my mother, both are connected to a floor standing lamp. Both work quite adequately once hooked up to Alexa.

Got this on offer for £10, plugged into wall socket, working within 2 minutes, tinny sound but expected that for what it is, got it to control devices from a separate room not to play music so I’m well happy

I’ve reviewed many….many so called smart switches that work with the likes of Alex and discovered that you really need to buy these Amazon ones if you want something that works day after day, month after month and year after year. Take it from an engineer and just bite the bullet !
