How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

I I bought this after reading Which reviews and Amazon reviews, it wasn't cheap but seemed to be worth the money to get better quality. I installed it using the mains adaptor provided with it. I bought an angle bracket separately to get the best angle for the camera, shame Ring don't provide it with the doorbell pack.

The installation was OK but as we have a porch I had to drill through a door frame then exit via the side of a brick wall. The set up via the app should have been straightforward but it took a few attempts to get the Ring wifi network to connect. Eventually it was set up and working. I connected my wife's phone as well and linked the doorbell to 2 Alexa speakers, it all worked, for about 4 hours! Then it disconnected. I had had enough by then. The following day I tried to reconnect it. I spent over 3 hours trying everything, sometimes it found the wifi network but would not connect, sometimes it found nothing, I read the troubleshooting advice, powered the router up and down and tried many of the suggestions, to no avail.

I found some suggestion ridiculous, re-siting the router nearer the doorbell, impractical and should be unnecessary. I had a strong wifi signa on my phone outside the house and all the other wireless devices work fine in the house with a strong signal. A suggestion to donwgrade the router speed from 5.0 ghz to 2.5ghz is ridiculous, why would you want all your other devices working at a slower speed to accommodate a doorbell! I tried the Ring online help but it just kept referring me to other articles.

I feared if I ever got it working again it would regularly crash and cause problems. I uninstalled the bell and have returned it. I now have holes in my door frame and brickwork and am out of pocket by £15 for a bracket which is of no use to me. A frustrating and disappointing experience!

Update:

After looking for alternatives and more research I bought the Ring 3 doorbell which has enhanced Wifi and support for 5.0 ghz as well as 2.4ghz. I installed this along with a WiFi range extender. It worked first time and has been fine since. I would recommend the model 3 over the 2, albeit more expensive. It is a shame Ring don't offer more support on selecting the best product for your situation. I have upgraded my rating from 2 to 4 stars. It would have been 5 without this experience.

Bought it after looking for the most suitable type of video doorbell for my needs. Decided on a dual frequency Ring Pro with plug-in adapter after reading reviews.
When it arrived and initially set up, all was good. Looked stylish & had 3 types of cover to choose from.
The Ring chime I ordered was fab. Definitely needed as the Ring doorbell itself is very quite. Both were initially simple to install and didn't need to worry (so I thought) about lost connection as bought the Ring Pro with adaptor with dual frequency. The video quality was good. We even took out 1 years subscription £24.99 to have
recordings saved etc.

First day all went well & had a signal & notifications, then for no reason it stopped working the following day. Checked on Device Health. It stated 'weak signal'. Tried reconnecting it via 'Device health', but the light on the doorbell wouldn't spin to set it up; then when it did it wouldn't reconnect to the network. Checked my Virgin media internet connection and signal was "strong".

Tried again the following day to reconnect. Looking at advice on the Ring website, it showed there was sometimes no power getting to it even though it was plugged in and we checked the socket was working. Moved router next to the Ring doorbell, yet it still wouldn't connect. Had a message stating 'connection weak' or 'unable to join network'. Router was only a foot away!!!

Tried again to reset it using advice from Ring, but still wouldn't work. Absolutely frustrating. Why would it work one day then not the next? Finally gave up as spent hours trying to reconnect it, but after Ring advised we get an electrician out as must be a power issue, I decided enough is enough and send it back.

Total waste of time & money. Since investigating the problem we noticed many other ex & current ring doorbell plug-in owners who have had similar problems....clearly a fault with the actual doorbell.

I'm refuse to pay even more to get an electrician out to reinstall or check it. £189.99 for the video doorbell with chime is enough.

So annoyed as bought it as have health issues, so wanted it to save me having to get up to answer the door if it was a salesman etc.

I've returned both the chime & Ring doorbell as not fit for purpose. Will look into another make and probably get one with a chargeable battery & solar panel to save issues with electrics.

So far the return process to Amazon has been simple. Waiting to be refunded for the Chime which was returned with the Ring pro. Already refunded for the Ring pro. Just waiting for a refund of the Chime.

Hope other owners have more luck as when working it is was great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mostly all good

Was very unconvinced by the benefits of a camera door bell. It was our local Police force who recommended their use in the local press due to parcels being stolen of door steps. So took the plunge and went with the brand leader Ring did not want a battery version and picked this up on offer. Was easy to set up just drilled an hole in the frame and stapled the cable around to the plug (I used cable staples) and fitted in the same place as our old bell push. Set up the app (first on my phone to set up then added it to the wife's phone (mistake she can see the tools coming in the house lol)) followed the simple instructions and we were up and running. Once you set the motion zone to your needs it picks up most things including the neighbours cat in the middle of the night but happy given car parked next to the door so added security for house and car. Also added a chime (at extra cost) which is located in the back porch so we can hear it in the garden (it is very loud) if someone is on the drive or at the door. Ok the cons. You need to subscribe to the ring cloud £25 one off so around £2 a month to keep footage if needed. Sometimes the bell will ring on your phone but struggles to connect in time to answer it. This could be a phone or network issue more than the bell itself but still an issue given the advertising shows connecting anywhere, anytime which is not the case. Overall: would I recommend it YES and I will be getting my OAP mum one to link to the Echo we got her so she can see who is at the door before she answers it and get alerts on her phone if anyone one is on her driveway.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product but could be better integrated with Alexa

Good product, although I bought a separate rail type power adapter as who has a plug near the front door or wants to drill more holes for wires!? Also constructed a relay so my traditional 8v doorbell would ring when the button on the Ring was pushed..... its a shame Ring don't provide better integration with UK doorbell and instead just hope you'll buy the plug in chime.
The picture quality is great and night vision pretty good. This was a plus for me as I'm using it for security mainly.
The motion sensing is good and does capture people as they walk to the door, which I believe the cheaper models are not so good at. Sometimes though it's like it's gone to sleep and the alert doesn't reach your phone for 20 seconds or so, but mostly it's pretty reliable.
It would be nice if it has better integration with Alexa (it is an Amazon product after all) specifically I would like to be able to set motion snooze through Alexa so when I'm at the front of the property it doesn't keep going off, or I have to tap through the menus to turn on snooze......"Alexa, snooze getting door for 30 minutes" shouldn't be rocket science, but alas, not currently possible!

4.0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about the Ring Doorbell Pro

Great for seeing who is at the door and if you subscribe, for reviewing saved recordings.

I really like that people don't need to ring the doorbell for you to know that they are there. Many delivery drivers knock, for example. The motion alert sorts that problem. Its also great that you can configure detection zones so that you don't get alerted by people moving in areas that you don't care about (such as on the street outside your garden/driveway). The motion detection range is very good too, as is the infrared night vision.

It's great that you can link the bell to other ring cameras and chimes too. Its really cool to have 'deck the halls' ring out at Christmas when someone presses the doorbell (or is that just me?)

I also really like the artificial intelligence that enables you to only alert motion on human forms (though once the AI mistook a cat for a human at 3:30 am and alerted, which wasn't funny)

BUT, if you live near a busy road, forget the idea that you can talk to whoever is at the door. You can hear the person at the door very clearly, but the doorbell speaker isn't powerful enough for people at the door to hear you if there is traffic nearby. So it's not really two way talk. The same applies to the Ring floodlight cameras, too.

For me the speaker power is the only downside to an otherwise excellent product. If you live on a quiet street this probably won't be an issue for you.

The doorbell is super easy to set up with your mobile phone, and there is a good amount of wire on the adapter (maybe 5-6 meters), which should be enough to reach a socket near your door.

Note that there isn't any other way to mains power your ring doorbell at the time of writing apart from this plug-in version (e.g. a Hardwired transformer). Ring products are targeted very much at the easy home DIY installer who knows their wifi password, owns a smartphone and is capable of installing apps on their phone and using them, so most people these days!

4.0 out of 5 stars It is virtually impossible to subscribe for the Protection Plans.

This is very useful and saves me from rushing to the front door, as delivery people don't recognize that it takes a a bit of time to go down or up even one floor to answer the doorbell. Also, it effectively monitors movement at the door and in front of the house, so that "Nottingham Knockers" can be avoided. It's a good product, but it is impossible to sign up for their Protection plans.
