How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

I bought both the ring and blink cameras before Amazon bought both companies quite a number of years ago. They are still run as separate companies and I decided to see which was better. Over the years I bought more ring cams for outside and use the blink inside. When these dinky little blink mini’s came out I really wanted to try them, and after they dropped price in a sale I bought this and the pan tilt blink.
The blink comes in a very compact box, but very well packaged. There are no useful instructions, only a QR code on the box and one on the device. Luckily they are not too difficult to set up. For those of you having also bought blink at the start also with a small amount of free cloud storage, I was grateful, the free cloud storage transfers on to these devices too. It's a pity there are no instructions - I had to use google just to look up how to remove the base - it's actually quite easy - hold the camera in one hand and gently pull base off with the other - this is to use the different mount points on the blink mini. I was also glad the new blink mini’s work just fine on my first gen blink sync module.
Comparing the two, ring and blink, the ring blows the blink out of the water. The subs cost the same now they are both owned by amazon, but the ring cameras have way more options and the software is better - e.g. I use the ring on my laptop, phone and desktop, and detection zones , timeline history etc are better on the ring. With blink you're limited to just ios and android - yes you can run an android emulator on windows to run blink app, but it's messy, blink should have created a windows version too. The main thing going for the blink is the cameras are much cheaper than the rings.
Overall I like the blink mini. It's very easy to set up and use. If you buy a blink mini, you can always buy a pan tilt body by itself later and pair them together (the app does all the work for you, it's very easy) - the pan tilt module is sold with and without the mini and can pair with your existing minis. Would I buy more? Only if they had a very good sale.

3.0 out of 5 starsVery frustrating!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 15 March 2023
I will give you the positives first and then the reason you may want to look at alternatives.
Installation is straightforward, as is setting it up to the router and App. The cameras look neat and are inobtrusive and the picture quality is more than adequate. Sound quality is more of a problem with a lot of distortion and white noise making it difficult to hear what people are saying.
The main problem which in hindsight would have made me choose an alternative is the subscription fee and how after the free trial it is made so difficult to use.
I do not need the services provided with the subscription, but just to monitor the comings and goings at my elderly mother's house. Although I have purchased the cameras and use my own broadband the cameras are set to disconnect every minute requiring constant reconnection. It is SO frustrating and I feel it is a rather devious way of forcing you to pay for a service you don't require.
So to sum up, if you need to record footage then this system is worth consideration. If you just wish to monitor and not record then I would strongly advise you look elswhere.
Come on Amazon stop trying to rob us by stealth!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's okay.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 23 March 2023

So first off, the Blink mini is an okay camera, it's not perfect mind but it does get the job done sort of. So the Blink Mini is NOT a continuous feed camera it records motion in bursts of 30 seconds. However, it does allow for an extended live view of up to 90 minutes via their subscription plans; Blink basic, and Blink plus. Although it does allow for a regular view of up to 5 minutes of live viewing with prompts of a continue screen every 60-90 seconds.

All of this is done via the Blink Mini app, which is free.

The camera in a nutshell; don't be fooled by its cheap-looking nature. It is housed in a plastic casing but it is of good quality, which offers versatility when it comes to placing your camera. It is lightweight and durable, powered via a micro USB cable. The base of the camera allows it to be mounted to the wall or other suitable surface via the screws provided, it's worth mentioning that this is NOT intended to be an outdoor camera, they have products specifically designed for outdoor use.

Personally, I have set up the camera to face out of a window, and it still works, but some of the features such as night vision and motion detection are affected but don't impact the overall use of the device.

If you are to use the Blink Mini pointing out of the window make sure you turn off Night vision by the app and have some form of lighting outside, as I did find with Night vision enabled it would not show a relatively good image due to distortion through the reflection of the window.

Lastly, the app. It's an okay app, but it could do with some improvements. It's pretty straight forward and talks you through setting up your camera/s and Blink accessories.

Other than that, I don't have anything extremely bad to say about the Mini. I think it's down to an individual's needs and budget - so for the Mini, I'd happily give it a 7/10.

prob bot best for top top home security but to catch someone doing something or check and talk to a pet... its fab. can't fault. get 30 days free trail which u can cancel anytime.. the button to cancel is easy to locate in app. no hidden costs. subscribion is for viewing camera live and records 30 secs of motion detection or records up to 30 seconds of live watching.
can download recored clips onto phone easy and share. can select the lights to stay off so the camera doesn't show up to something or someone u want invisible to see. notifications pop up when motion detection is activated. (area to be detected is selected by you)
I use when need to ..plus in and leave it. done. I will be using the subscription as works out at only £2.50 amonth for 1 device. if have more devices all linked up together then it's more per month.
colour image. enough to see whats what. I found it very good and accurate... Mayb a 2 second delay time. night vision... is enough if have lamp on...or hallway light. etc. total blackness u won't see much and if very far away. I reccomend. I'm no techno person but brought this hoping and I'm really pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stay Connected and Secure with the Blink Mini Camera
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 15 March 2023

I recently purchased the Blink Mini Compact Indoor Plug-in Smart Security Camera and I'm impressed with its performance and ease of use. This camera is incredibly easy to set up and can be plugged into any standard wall outlet, making it perfect for monitoring a variety of indoor spaces.

The camera itself is small and unobtrusive, so it doesn't draw attention to itself. It has a 1080p HD video resolution and infrared night vision, which means you can capture clear footage at any time of day. The camera also has motion detection and can send alerts to your phone when it detects movement, which is a great feature for keeping an eye on your home while you're away.

One of the best things about the Blink Mini is the app that comes with it. The app is intuitive and easy to use, and allows you to view live video from your camera, as well as manage and customize your camera's settings. You can also access your camera's footage from anywhere in the world, which is great for checking in on your home when you're away on vacation or at work.

Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase of the Blink Mini Compact Indoor Plug-in Smart Security Camera. It's an affordable and easy-to-use security camera that provides peace of mind and security for my home. If you're in the market for a reliable indoor security camera, I would definitely recommend giving the Blink Mini a try.

I was looking for a camera to see my baby during naps and night sleep.

For the price paid, I am really satisfied. Clear image, night vision is good too. If I am not viewing in the app, I get a notification “motion detected” which is brilliant.

The only downsize is the subscription that has to be paid monthly…..

Cameras are okay do what they say on the tin and I was only using them to keep an eye on pets.
However the blink support is really poor, you go round in a endless loop. Staff know nothing and you can not get a refund or replacement for love nor money.

If you’ve already got the blink system you can’t go wrong we paid for our daughter to have the system outside her house then they got a dog and wanted to keep and eye in him while they were out so we got them this as pet cams can be pricey, really clear picture and the doorbell works through it highly recommend she’s over the moon and can watch pooch when there out and talk to him if needed

quickly connected, not yet tried motion sensor yet, I do wish 1 thing, I could use my headset or ear pods with it, for a private talk to someone at home if I'm away, It only uses fone speaker, id like to use Bluetooth device with it. other than that, I like the quality, infra red probably is rather dim, but makes a room look brighter than it is I'd recommend.

UPDATED JUNE (1 MONTH POST PURCHASE)

I had originally reviewed this at three stars, but after a month of usage, I have reduced to two stars.

The issue with live video stalling appeared to resolve itself after a day or two, so that is not of concern.
However, the camera has a MAJOR flaw switching between day mode, and night vision. Most mornings, the camera still has the red light lit, meaning night vision is on. The camera does not capture any of my movements during this time. The only way I have found to fix it is to enter live view, you hear the audible click as night vision shuts off, and then it will start to record motion clips again. Unless I remember to do this every morning, there's a chance the camera won't catch that vital piece of footage. In fact, while writing this review at 3pm on a sunny afternoon, I've just gone downstairs to check, and found the camera with the red light on. Last motion was captured 00:38 this morning, when I went to bed.

I've seen other reviews mentioning similar. I've attached a photo, showing the camera in night vision mode during the day. Despite standing in front of it, it did not record any motion.

For me, this makes the camera absolutely useless for it's primary function. If you want to use it purely for live view, it would be fine, but I could have been burgled a dozen times with this camera running, and it would have captured nothing. For this reason, I've chosen to unplug and replace with a higher end camera.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a Day One review and I will update as applicable with further use.

In Summary :
Clunky, unintuitive and slightly buggy app
Good video and sound quality, but records in very short bursts
No geofencing function, and scheduling will be unideal for most
Best treated as a toy/gimmick/casual monitor than a serious home security system
Excellent pricepoint but beware upcoming storage costs
-----------
I've had this on order for a while now, so I was more than pleased when it finally arrived today, but significantly less pleased after a few hours of testing and fiddling.

As with most amazon products, it arrived neatly packaged in a single box, with compartments for camera, cable, and plug. The camera itself looks very neat, a smaller form factor than I expected, and comes installed on a stand, with screws which can be used to attach to the ceiling or walls. The instructions are printed on the lid of the box, and are as simple as Download App, Plug in Camera, Follow in app instructions. To be fair, the setup was an absolute breeze and I was up and running within a couple of minutes.

First port of call; lets get a look at the live video and see what it looks like. On the homepage, you are greeted with a plain grey box, with a video icon bottom left, and a camera icon bottom right. It's not immediately apparently where everything is in the app, despite small tutorial bubbles on first load. They video quality to Blink's credit is very good, and exactly what you need from a security camera. This aspect of it won't let you down.

My major irritant with this app is that when trying to view live video, I occasionally got stuck with a loading wheel. Then, when I go back to try again, I get an error that "Live video is currently playing" or "Live view failed", with the only apparent resolution being to close the app and open it again. Also some reason, the box on the home screen only actually updates when you take a new photo. It doesn't even show you the last motion recording which seems like it would be the sensible thing to do.

Which brings me to motion alerts. After getting about two dozen in the first half hour setting up the camera, I turned these off. The default frequency is set to 10s, which you can adjust, but of course you want it as frequent as possible to capture any intruders. You can set a schedule to only send alerts at certain times of the day, but for anyone with an irregular schedule, or who lives in a multi person household, that is going to be an issue. Placing it in my living room, I was also recording a lot of motion so the the lack of geofencing (the ability to only receive notifications when your phone is away from your home) is a bit of a dealbreaker for me. Due to the number of motion alerts, I filled about 15% of my storage allowance in a few hours. Further to this, the motion alerts are only captured once movement is recorded, and for short bursts. I was able to move past the camera without my face being captured a few times.

The sound on videos is good. Not exceptional but more than good enough for a home camera. The talk back function is actually quite loud and clear. One thing I did note on the sound was I got a lot of feedback when it was near my IT equipment, so you might want to be careful where you place it in a home office.

What shouldn't be forgotten is that this is a £35 camera, which is a great price for someone who's not taking it too seriously as a home security device. However what should also not be forgotten is that come March 2021, you're going to have to sign up to a subscription plan to keep storing videos, which will set you back £2.50 a month - almost the cost of the camera for a year.

If you're buying this camera as a vehicle to watch your dog jump on the couch while you're at work, or to keep an eye on the house when you're off on holiday, I'd suggest you'll be more than satisfied. If you're looking at this with a view to serious home security, spend a few more pounds and look at some of the bigger hitters on the market.
