How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsEasy To Install But Think Before Buying If You Need It
Reviewed in the United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ on 17 April 2023
I found this easy to setup.
All Ring's stuff seem to be scan the code on the back, sign into the application ( which is very good by the way ) and link it to what you already have. It's loud with various options on the sound to play when the doorbell is pressed.

However I didn't realize that I can get my Amazon Echos to inform me when the doorbell is pressed.
Dohh!

As I have three of them around the house the Chime is pretty redundant.
Not everybody will have that many Echos of course and may even need something in the garage as an alert but since I usually always have my phone on my person that tells me when there is somebody at the door anyway. So I have hardly used it and I would suggest you are better off buying a cheap Echo on one of Amazon's sales than a doorbell chime. Echo's are more flexible.

3.0 out of 5 starsCan’t share access, can’t set doorbell louder than motion alerts
Reviewed in the United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ on 22 April 2020
Set it up in a minute. However, you can’t share access to it. So, my husband can control it from the app, but I can’t (unlike my ring doorbell). Major bummer. The whole point of the app is that I don’t need to come down the stairs to unplug it when I need quiet. And I have no access to settings, so I can’t snooze it or schedule it in any way if my husband’s not home.

Problem #2. Why don’t I have access? Behold the setup snapshot. There’s nothing to β€œtap” to say the device has already been installed. And if you try to set it up with the QR code when it’s already been set up, it blocks you and tells you to ask permission from the owner. Thanks, Ring, but I bought it. It’s first dibs, apparently.
So, I tried to set it up without a QR code, got blocked, and hubby got a lovely email to say Ring blocked me from setting up the chime on my app. Lovely. But no option for him to enable me to use it.

Problem #3: One volume toggle. Two different notifications (doorbell vs motion). I need the doorbell chime to be loud and the motion chime to be quiet. Doesn’t everyone? Nobody needs to stop what they’re doing when the neighbour’s cat comes for a nap on the doormat.
And yes, I am aware that you can disable motion notifications altogether (or rather the 'owner' can), but that doesn't cut it. I'd like motion notifications to stay on, but only loud enough for the neighbour's cat or a potential burglar to hear them, not the entire household.
They really should have thought of this before releasing it.

Problem #4: Say you set the doorcam to Away. Your chime will still make noise, even though you're not home to hear it. So, your neighbour gets to know you had visitors, unless you unplug the thing or snooze it every time you leave home. What's the use of using the 'Away' option, then? In reply to the comment below, as a shared user, I don't get to make the rules on what Away means. So, even though my husband's not around for the day, I have no control over what happens to this chime and the noise it makes when I step out, unless I nag him to tweak his settings every time.

As it stands, this chime isn't of any use to me, unless I'm in the back garden and away from my phone when someone rings at the door. But I'll keep it because I have elderly relatives who are hard of hearing, visit once in a blue moon, and always want to be the ones who open the door.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced, feature lacking

Firstly, Β£30.00 to make a sound to allow you to know when someone presses your doorbell I believe is too much. Secondly, you have a limited number of chime sounds (no personalisation) and cannot set one volume for a press of the doorbell chime but a separate, lower volume for the motion detection alert sound - Ridiculous!

You see, I bought a Ring Doorbell (it would seem unlike most people) to have a new doorbell. The fact it had a camera was a handy addition. Whereas anyone I know who has one bought it for the β€˜security’ of having a camera and the addition of being a doorbell. A crucial difference.

In order to make my new doorbell function as my Β£9.99 one did, I’ve had to spend Β£60.00 on two chime units. This is so I can hear if someone is at the door in the back garden, or when vacuuming upstairs. I don’t always walk around my house with my phone on me so I needed a way to be alerted to someone at the door. I found out I could pair my five Echo speakers to Ring and use those to alert me. Brilliant, but no it is not. You see I don’t have my Echo’s set to max volume - so if you have one set to 3/4 volume this is too low to hear the doorbell notification if your outside or vacuuming… So I made a routine in Skills. This would set volume to max, and play a custom Spotify β€˜doorbell sound effect’ track. Failed. It takes too long for the routine to begin - and makes a loud beep prior to it running. So back to needing a Ring Chime.

It arrived, then you need to pair it to the Doorbell (easy) but it needs your WiFi. Okay, not so much when you want to plug it in to the Conservatory which has weak signal. Ring has a solution - at more cost. This is the issue, there is a solution but it continues to make the cost rise and rise for something SO basic as making a sound when someone is at your door.

I even thought of having the old doorbell back, keep the ring doorbell as a camera only - but this would confuse people and delivery drivers which go press, and you can bet they would choose the new fancy ring doorbell to press which would not alert me. Anyway, long story short I have given in bought two chimes and a wifi extender and now spent close to Β£200 to make it all work and do what my Β£9.99 doorbell did for years.

The device was great while it lasted. Easy to setup and never had to think about it again. It failed after a couple of years; I expected it to last much longer than that.

On the face if it this look a great bit of kit. Smartly packages and the Chime itself looked neat and compact. Instructions appeared simple and easy to follow. That unfortunately is where the positives end.
I read a few reviews that installation could be a bit problematic but you could get there in the end. For me this was not the case. Over a period of 7 days i must of tried about 50-60 times to get the Chime to connect to my internet. I tried different sockets in different rooms. I reset the Chime numerous times. I even read that someone could only connect when the sockets was at a higher level than the router, so I gave that a go - didn't work ! I tried my phone, my wife's phone and my tablet, still nothing. I tried at different times of the days - nope! I thought it may be my router ( i run my internet through a D-Link router and have my service providers router in modem mode) so i turned it off and took the old router out of modem mode. Still nothing.
As a last throw of the dice i contacted Ring themselves. Not a great experience. They just told me it must be poor internet connection! I couldn't be bothered to explain that the Chime was only 6ft away from router and the router was throwing out over 100 mbs.
I've finally given up and returned it.
Shame i didn't know that if you have an Echo devise you can add a skill to it notify you that someone's at the door!

Bought this in July 2020. But by July 2022 it had broken. No sign of life. So a product that doesn’t last more than a couple of years.

Works fine just WHATEVER you do, DO NOT type the WiFi network password in incorrectly when you set it up for the first time as after a few days the lovely constant blue light will turn to a flashing red and green light, press the reset button select the WiFi network again lovely blue light for a few days then red and green flashing. Follow Ring tech support advice light remains constant blue for a few days then yep you guessed it flashing red and green. Reset device and make it forget the WiFi network, reselect WiFi network and enter correct password first time constant blue light for nearly 2 weeks then yep you guessed it flashing red and green light. Ring tech support advise this is due to invalid WiFi network password which can be sorted by the 2 actions above. The device works fine even with the r/g flashing light, connected, rings and health check all fine, personally I think their software has a bug that can’t clear a duff password if entered incorrectly first time and the device must cycle or reset on a regular basis that then triggers the I’ve got the wrong WiFi network password red/green flashing light instead of constant blue

Device has been constantly recording and that consumes the battery life. Also, I am asked to pay for cloud subscription to view even 10 minutes old recordings. I am thefore going to dump it in the bin soon and purchase a better no demand device.
