5.0 out of 5 starsGood picture, pretty reliable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 7 February 2023
I have had this fitted for about 4 months now so feel I can give an accurate review of how well this product works.
We bought it as our Hive outdoor camera died and this one was half the price but it is a much better product overall.
The installation was simple and the included mains cable was long enough for where we wanted to place it. It connected straight away to the WiFi and was up and running in no time.
The ring app is very good and is where you do the majority of the setting up. Once you are happy with the direction the camera is pointing you can set up zones you want to be extra vigilant and/or zones you want to exclude for neighbour privacy for example. The good thing about these zones is you don’t have to have areas confined to square/rectangular shapes. They can be adjusted with angles which is a great feature if your camera views over an incline like mine.
The night vision is great but it does pick up the headlights of passing cars sometimes and thinks it is someone approaching the camera which can get annoying. The sound and microphone is good with little to no lag when talking to people through the camera. Unlike the Hive you can view what’s going on when you get a notification straight away as it pits you straight to live view which is a very useful feature. Viewing recent recordings takes a small while to load but it is pretty quick.
In the four or so months the camera has frozen twice which was remedied once by a reboot via the app and another time by pulling the cable out of the back of the camera itself. This is slightly concerning as it wouldn’t be overly useful if it happened whilst on holiday or something but hasn’t happened since.
Overall, I would recommend this product as it is easy to use, has a reliable app interface and is a reasonable price. Even the subscription to the ring app is about £3 per month which isn’t too bad. Hopefully the freezing up was just a one off.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot suitable for use with a 4G mobile router
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 4 January 2023
I have been trying to use this outdoor stick-up cam (with rechargeable battery) to help monitor the front of an empty property that is over 50 miles away. I have two cameras, one indoors that is plugged into an electrical socket and the other outdoors (that uses a rechargeable battery). I am using a 4G mobile router for wi-fi at the property as the property does not have a regular broadband connection. The indoor Ring camera works fine (most of the time - occasionally it drops the wi-fi signal) but the stick-up cam is proving to be a pain. It keeps dropping the wi-fi connection and the problem with that is that you cannot reset the device without being physically present in order to press a button underneath the cap of its base. No doubt I will have to experiment with the location of the mobile router in order to get a stronger signal, but it does not help that the stick-up cam appears to work at first only for it to drop its wi-fi connection after I have travelled back home. It is also annoying that nowhere in the literature regarding this camera does it tell you the size of drill bit you need in order to install it in brickwork. (You need a 7/32 inch drill bit, by the way.) It is only once you start installing the camera that the installation app itself tells you that you need a 3/16 inch drill bit (however, for the plugs supplied I found that a drill bit size of 7/32 inch was better - this gave a tight fit to the wallplugs, which I had to tap in with a hammer). That information should be provided on the web page and on the leaflets included in the packaging - you should not have to wait to be told the drill bit size you need just as you are actually going through the process of installing the camera. (A drill bit is not included in the packaging.) As far as I am concerned, so far this is proving to be an unreliable product, which is awkward to reconnect to wi-fi: not what you want in a security camera.

Update two weeks later: I have been back to the house (that is over 50 miles away) to try to get the stick-up cam to work. This time I moved the position of the mobile router and of the stick-up cam. I moved them so that they are only around 6 feet from each other, with just a wooden garage door in between the stick-up cam and the mobile router. Again the indoor Ring camera (that is in the same garage as the mobile router) continues to work most of the time (sometimes though it does drop the wi-fi only to recover later in the day), but the outdoor stick-up cam still has problems. The rechargeable battery in the stick-up cam was down to 30% capacity after just 2 weeks - so I replaced the battery with a fully charged one - and (frustratingly) the same unreliability with the stick-up cam has recurred, even though it is now very close to the router with only a wooden door in between: I got it working fine while I was physically there (after much faffing around) only to find after I got back home that it had dropped the wi-fi connection yet again! I can only assume that I would need a much stronger wi-fi signal for the stick-up cam to work and I cannot provide that with my 4G mobile router. I was notified (by the Ring app) that the replacement battery that I inserted 5 days ago, when it was fully charged, is now down to 10%. I can only assume that the cam has been continuously trying to reconnect to wi-fi and depleted the battery in the process. I think I will have to abandon the outdoor stick-up cam and just keep using the indoor Ring camera: disappointing.

Update 10 days later: I think the main problem is that I am using a 4G mobile router and that does not provide a strong enough signal for uploading video on a consistent basis. That is not the fault of the stick-up cam. What may be the fault of the stick-up cam, however, is that when I checked in Device Health it told me that the wi-fi signal was strong enough. Maybe the signal was strong enough for downloading but it certainly was not strong enough for uploading video.

I have taken the stick-up cam down from the house that is 50 miles away and am now using it outdoors at home. So far it is working absolutely fine and consistently with my home broadband so I do think the problem is that the 4G mobile router is not designed for uploading video and I was just asking too much of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good performance, great bundle price, but needs subscription

Firstly, this is the same camera/enclosure as the battery version - you just don't get a battery. You can insert one if you change your mind later. You do get some thick wired chargers that would be enough for an EV and thus a huge box.

One option would be to use a battery and a solar charger for it - though best get the battery version then.

Again, best price is bundled with a Show 5 - if you don't need/want the Show just return it and get the camera for a killer price. At normal price it is so-so but still worth it. But why not get it discounted?

Compared to the smaller Ring camera, this can be deployed outside (sealed enclosure) though probably stick to under eaves and not straight into the rain. Due to battery compartment - it is bigger but not by much.

It also has a SMA plug (grommet-ed) for an external WiFi antenna, and if signal is weak then a directional one is a good idea. Make sure you point it towards router.

Picture wise I don't see anything different compared to smaller camera and doorbell, picture is fine even in low-light. Sensor does not seem to be (performing) any different.

Unlike doorbell, if you just want live-view in certain conditions then perhaps you can get away without subscribing - but again, it becomes much less useful. If you deploy more of these then it makes sense to go for the "plus" sub that covers all cameras at one location.

As with doorbell, note that somehow this camera also chatters a lot and might kill your data allowance if you're using a mobile router 4G/5G that has a data cap. One day I may have to look into that...

3.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable enough system but not impressed at with customer service - faulty battery after 5 weeks

Bought 3 of these about 6 weeks ago. Arrived on time, easy enough to set up and happy with picture quality etc. However, the battery on one of them died after the recent cold weather so I brought it inside and charged it up. The light on the battery turned from orange to green so all was good. However, when putting it back in the unit, it didn't work. On checking the app, it says "Add a battery". The Ring website does say that battery life may drain quicker in cold weather, so I charged it again. Same problem. The battery (and unit) have now been indoors for over a week and we have tried charging with different cables and plugs to no avail. I went on the website for customer service and opted for their webchat as I work full time and it isn't convenient to spend ages on the phone. After a lengthy chat I was told that they were very busy and couldn't help me any further and I would have to phone while I was near the unit to go through troubleshooting. This is not practical in my personal circumstances so effectively I am left with a useless unit after just 6 weeks. I am reluctant to spend another £25 on a replacement battery as believe that this should be replaced by the retailer - but getting hold of them in any meaningful way seems impossible. Overall, really annoyed and not impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for cheap/modulated home security

I have a hive system in my home with the sensors to sound the alarm and alert me.
I bought one of these to add more vision in the house incase I get notified. The hive cameras didn't work too well for me, but these just seem to work great.
Being battery powered (which lasts a very long time), means you can position it anywhere and has a wide angle lens to see a decent amount. Night vision works great and is very details.
Being able to see you home at the tap of a button whenever you want whilst your away is great. the camera also has Ring's motion detection which like the doorbells can be tailored to specific areas. This means if you had just one or two of these in your house, they act as a security system in themselves. They will detect motion and alert you, meaning you check in to see. It can even sound an alarm, all be it not that loud.
You can even two way communicate through them, which means as well as letting people know you're watching them, you can also use them to monitor pets or people.
They're really adaptable and work brilliantly with Alexa also, so you can set up routines etc when motion is detected etc. If you grab these when they're on offer, I think its great to have one in your house when you're away. It uses the same battery as the doorbell too, so I hot swap them when I'm not using the stick up cam, to save waiting for it to charge before putting it back in.

I bought this camera after finding my side gate open every morning for about a week, after being sure I'd shut it the night before, and catching somebody on my drive shining a torch. He was looking for another address for a delivery apparently.
I added it to my Ring app first, just in case it didn't work, and then mounted it to a fence facing the gate. All in all it took about ten minutes at the very most. I then set it to announce any movement on my Alexa's.
The next morning at about 4am we were woken by "motion detected at the side" and on reviewing the app we spotted an intruder. By the time I got down the stairs he had gone, but he returned for the next two mornings. It was only on his third trip (and after enabling colour night vision) that we worked out he was simply using the bin I had around the side of the house. The image was clear and of the perfect length.
We moved the bin and he no longers comes into our front garden and all has been quiet ever since.
I guess I need to apologise if he is now dumping his rubbish somewhere else ( usually a can of cider or an energy drink in my experience) but there's a public bin over the road so I'm hoping he's simply crossing over and using that.
The camera does it's job and we have no night time victors without us knowing about it.
I've just realised we have a cheeky neighbour that uses our gate as a shortcut during the day, but the camera does its job and I digress.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really an "alternative to cctv systems" watch out for the 10 minute reset!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 15 February 2023

Part of the reason I bought this camera was to replace an aging battery operated Blink camera and as I already have a ring Doorbell camera I felt it was a good option.
The problem is the camera and system does not run for more than 10 minutes before turning itself off and that to me is just silly.
Its a mains device so has permanent power so why not? Can't be a power issue as its running on mains power but looking at reports on user forums I see this is an ongoing issue with a few "workarounds" that may or may not work
To be fair I don't need it to run 24/7 all the time but when waiting for home helps or deliveries it would be nice to use it for more than 10 minutes! I also noticed that on occasions that while yes you can simply tell Alexa to restart again it will not always work straight away and then there is that other nice catch where you pay for the storage and the basic package only covers one camera meaning you need to pay more per month just to add one extra camera! And i thought blink was bad.

And Ring, please use a straight dc power plug like every other camera I have owned and not a 90 degree one as I have had to drill a much bigger hole in the wall to get the cable through!

Having said all that, the cameras are good quality, the mains power cable to the camera is a good length and really good quality and the sound while a bit "tinny" does work. Not having to change batteries is of course a plus as well

Overall its a good system but let down by a bit of poor design (90 degree plug) and that 10 minute runtime "refresh"

Just purchased two of these cameras along with solar panels to replace my Swann CCTV recorder which packed up. Absolutely brilliant cameras which was easy to set up and very impressive picture quality. The Ring app was very easy to get going on my iPhone along with my desktop PC allowing me to see the footage. Shame the app is not available for my tablet though. I get notifications of movements picked up by my cameras on my hearing aids that use bluetooth and I've checked the app while away from home and it works perfectly well. Very, very pleased.

So already having a Ring doorbell decided to get something to cover the back garden. Aside from the usual wait for a battery charge the setup and install couldn't be easier. Nice to see what is going on in the garden at night and the quality is pretty good. The battery is holding out well in the cold considering but will be getting a solar panel once the battery runs down as I don't want to be climbing up to charge/replace but that's for another review. In closing you get what you pay for. Ring products are pretty solid.

After a few incidences of gangs trying car doors and front doors in our estate I bought two of these for the front in my house. I couldn’t be happier with them. It gives me huge peace of mind to know who is approaching my house. Sound, picture quality and motion detection are all excellent. It’s handy being able to talk to delivery drivers when I’m not in so they can leave packages in a safe location. Battery life lasts ages too. Really happy with my purchase.
