I do have a couple of gripes - there is almost no discernible difference in brightness of the switch indicators between on/off state , they are supposed to be dim = off and bright = on .. rubbish its just the same … a bit more noticeable without the front cover .
So I don’t physically use the switches, I only use them through the app on my phone or alexa, then it works well and is reliable. I also make some use of the built in auto condition program but found one has mostly to invent workaround auto commands as several inbuilt if/then functions do not work. Or maybe are a part of a quite expensive on-going payment subscription … (seems a bit like buying a car only to find the engine is only rented and wont work wiout payment ! ). Sorry, not doing that ! It’s a switch .. purchased and it should work without the need of a subscription.
75% recommended.
Update: I have deleted the device and reinstalled it resulting in some functions now working.
In UK & Ireland the back boxes we fit have 4 M3.5 screw holes and with these switches the top and bottom fixing holes on the back box are in the way preventing the switch from fitting. You will need to remove or fold the top and bottom fixing holes on the back box.
As we use metal back boxes it might be a good ides to use some insulating tape over the securing screws of the switch terminals. They just seem a wee bit to close to the metal of the back box for my liking
Apart from that a good switch
I deleted and re-set up the device numerous times to no avail. With my network analysis tools I was able to determine that the device was in fact connected to the router and had been assigned an IP address which meant it should be online and connected to Sonoff servers. It was not connecting to the internet. I read about half a dozen "solutions involving DNS manipulation, router reconfiguration and so forth. There was NO WAY I was going to go through all of that just to get my £17 smart switch to work. I expected it to "just work" as all of my other smart devices have. I was at this point collecting all of the packaging to send it back. But, it occurred to me that I had restarted the several times, but had not restarted the device by turning off the electricity and turning it back on after several seconds. IT WORKED!!! Within one minute it connected and was up and running. And, within another 5 minutes it was connect with Alexa and taking my commands.
What I learned is this:
1. Read the instructions carefully regarding the meaning of the various LED flashing sequences. Makes sure you are in pairing mode when trying to connect.
2. iPhone will not work for quick pairing (it didn't for me anyway). You CAN pair it with an iPhone in compatibility mode. If you have an Android device it appears to be easier.
3. Once you have successfully paired the device and given it it's permanent name and it will not connect to the internet (you get the message that it is OFFLINE) check to see if it has been assigned an IP address by your router. You can do this with any network analyzer available in the app store or the Play Store for free. You should be able to recognise the devices connected to your router and if you see one with the name SONOFF your device is connected to the router.
4. Before giving up, turn the electricity off at the mains, wait a few seconds and turn it back on. If it works for you as it did me, within 5 to 10 minutes you will have a steady LED wireless indicator on your panel and you will be connected. Alexa setup is quite easy and straight forward because the eWeLink application is used for a wide variety of devices and is immediately recognised by Alexa.
Now, I must say a word about Sonoff customer care. At the height of my frustration, I emailed Itead support in China. I had little hopes of getting any response as that has been my experience when dealing with Chinese company customer service. However, I was dead wrong. They responded within hours and were genuinely interested in helping me with this issue. I have so far been contacted by two separate individuals. I am impressed and pleased with Sonoff customer care. In fact I have today ordered two more of the same switches because you just don't normally see that level of customer care. Thank you, Sonoff.
installation fine though remember you need a negative wire
Connecting to wifi fine and control app works with no problem, connected it up to my google home and no issues.
happily recommend
My only criticism is the setup procedure was problematic until I opted for the comparability mode setup option. Then it worked straight away.
Having bought three different cheap smart plug brands including this one, including Smart Life and Tapo. The setup is pretty similar between all three so if you managed one of those you’ll manage this one.
