I have just gotten mine, 1-2 hours ago, so am gonna do a first impressions review and will update later as I play more sounds through the sub and decide if I am gonna keep it or not.
First, this thing is heavy, they have stuffed a LOT of stuff, in a small space here, but to be fair it is pretty small really and looks quite good, just a shame it only comes in black really.
Packaging, fab, it is really well packed, inside the box it even comes with it's own carry/store/dust bag which is really good, the whole thing feels really well put together and really well packaged and presented.
Pairing, was an absolute piece o cake, for me at least, so no trouble there, literally took 60 seconds, and I was playing music through it, paired to one of my Gen 4 Echo's.
Sound, seriously, I kid you not, this is a little beast, as many other folks have said, basically overpowers pretty much everything, so you have to mess about in the Alexa App to get it to calm down, I have mine sat on the carpet to help absorb some of the thumps, and even with it at -6 it is proper thumping, almost too much to be honest, but hey, some folks like it that way I suppose.
Some of the noise is just that, noise, it seems to distract from the music and over powers some of it, so, it sounds a bit flat and muffled in places, I have fiddled with the settings on the app, but as other folks will tell you, the single biggest failure and let down of this device is the complete lack of ability to control it independently from your linked device.
So, you have no real control over the sub in terms of power or output, you cannot simply turn it off or disengage it if you are playing something lighter or need something a bit gentler and need to kill the constant thumping or drowning out of the mid tones/treble tones, though I suppose you could just unplug or unpair it, but what is the point of that, it just becomes a very heavy giant lego head paperweight then.
You would, of course, not need to turn it off if you could control it directly, you could just turn it down a bit, but you have no control over it in terms of Bass or Volume, which to be honest is a serious oversight of huge proportions IMHO, and this, despite it clearly being a quality bit of kit, makes it a terrible choice in some setups/places and makes it harder to live with as it lacks any real flexibility in daily use, in short, the software is rubbish, and this really is the fly in the ointment here and really am suprised that Amazon have not sorted this out cos this is a huge, constant, complaint from pretty much everyone.
The other niggle I already have, I cannot directly control the volume from the Amazon Music app, I have to keep switching between Alexa and the Music app or talk to the Echo, which of course reduces the volume and interupts the song/music, none of which of course are so bad, but which again, makes it fairly frustrating to use. Again, I feel let down by sub-par software, and when you consider the amount of cash many of us pay for Music/Prime etc, and the amount of cash we all spend with Amazon, it is really not good enough.
Overall, some stuff sounds really quite good, other stuff sound dead and flat because it is suffering from thump overkill, there is no balance to it.
I want to love it, I thought it would be nice addition to my Gen 4 Echo's and dots, I am just not sure at this point if I can love it and am not sure if I am willing to just, put up with it.
Will update things over the next couple weeks before I decide if I am keeping it or not.
UPDATE:
So, have had it a week or so now, and decided to hook up both my Echo Gen 4's to the sub and it sounds so so so much better, using only one of the Echos the sub was just overpowing everything.
Most stuff, sounds pretty good, some stuff still sounds a bit flat and sometimes a bit odd, but overall, really quite pleased with it and would recommed it to folks with the advice that when hooked to a single device, it may not be a great experience, depending on the type of music you like of course, cos it just overpowers everything is quite unpleasant, but hook it to two (not sure how this would be with Echo Dots as they are smaller) devices, such as an Echo or Studio and it sounds pretty good.
Not quite loving it, but rather, I really do quite like it, and will be keeping it.
I’ve bought & setup 2 studio’s + subwoofer, sounds perfect, fab deep bass. No distortion, good cross-over. Equivalent to a system I tested that cost us$3k comprising 4 speakers + subwoofer.
After checking online, the important bit is “unpair studios” then create a new ‘speaker group’ starting with subwoofer then add each studio.
Then perfect, super bass with trance, symphony gongs, hans zimmer & Atmos Dolby movies.
I placed the subwoofer on a yoga block to keep it steady, u can feel the air pump from the lower opening and it vibrate.
Note; only works with amazon apps (I’ve got Spotify linked) & fire tv.

Only issue I have had is that it takes a while for your speakers to realise they are on the same network during setup, in the speaker pair settings, and the fact that they seem to work on my hotspot, at home with bt, but not virgin media for some reason, stopping seconds into playback- most likely due to high packet loss
It looks nice and feels very sturdy.
It set-up and combined with my stereo pair after around 3 mins delay.
First impressions were that the default bass balance was a little too much, making the sound muddy, so the bass slider in the app was adjusted just a tiny bit down.
Sound was OK for a cheaper 'Sub' - when placed midway between the Dots.
Now to the nitty gritty!
Apart from the lags introduced by this device when giving Alexa new commands - stopping or changing tracks etc...
The main problem with this 'Sub' is it is not a Sub!
It is far too directional.
I already have a lovely sub bass system (Adam Audio) in another room for my music production. So I do know what to expect when Subs are placed out of the way. A proper sub will persuade your ears that the sub bass is coming at you, but with no direction. Our ears can't tell so easily where sub bass originates, so stereo imaging isn't affected by the placement of a proper Sub bass unit.
With this 'Sub' placed to one side, in the corner of the room etc - you can plainly hear the bass coming from that direction. So your stereo image is ruined.
This unit, as others have pointed out, has no proper roll off adjustment and is heading too far towards full range bass to be of use as a true sub.
The limited sliders in the app are of little use when trying to adjust the roll off.
It would be OK to put this in the middle of your L and R speakers, but that really restricts the appeal of a true Sub. They are designed so that they can be heard but not seen, if desired!
It would explain why so many one star reviewers, who have Echo Studio units, are not hearing much bass from this 'Sub'.
Quite simply, it is not a Sub Bass Unit!
3 stars - because I'm feeling generous!
Returning though, I'm afraid.
